The Madison County Historical Society is sponsoring a first-ever and exciting event for its final meeting of the year on October 20th! It is presenting a guided tour through a portion of the older sections of the Richmond Cemetery. The expert guides will be Jerry Ann Dimitrov and Dean Whitaker. Jerry Ann is the Co-Author of the Inventory of Burials for the Richmond Cemetery, a member of the Cemetery’s Board of Trustees, and an expert on the artistic and architectural element of monuments. Dean is a long-time student of Madison County history and particularly its people so is able to easily relate their achievements and other life events. Jointly, they will provide thumbnail sketches of some of our very notable residents and descriptive interpretations of the monuments with their unique artistic features. Due to the wealth of material available, this year’s tour covers only a small portion of the oldest area of the burial grounds which dates to the mid-nineteenth century.

The MCHS plans to make this a recurring event in upcoming years as the Richmond cemetery holds many famous and influential persons of both local and national renown. Many monuments in the older sections are unique and beautiful markers for family plots as well as individual grave markers as the families had the resources to create them to commemorate their departed relatives and ancestors.

We hope you will plan to join us for this tour which will start at 5:30 sharp and last about an hour and 30 minutes. The only entry to the cemetery will be through the Summit Street gate starting at 5:00 pm. The tour is free and open to the public as well as MCHS members. A Q&A session will follow the tour activities for those who wish to participate. The Richmond Tourism Department is graciously sponsoring the Richmond Trolley to transport those who have mobility difficulties which would preclude walking for the tour. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the rest of us.

If weather is inclement, the rain date will be October 27th.

After months of patient waiting, purchasers of "Madison County, Kentucky Pictorial History (1786-2015)" can finally pickup their hard-bound copies on the weekend of August 6th and 7th at the Madison County Library on Main Street in Richmond. On Saturday, pickups will be between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM while Sunday pickups will be from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. For those who requested shipment of the book, Acclaim Publishers is currently packaging and mailing them.

After a sell-out for the original printing, the Madison County Historical Society was authorized to manage a second offering of the Madison County Pictorial History Book which was conceived and assembled by the Madison County Pictorial History Book Committee. This beautiful 356-page book includes more than 1,500 photos of Madison County life through its ages and from every corner of the county. Reception and feedback on the quality and content of the book was outstanding and it was awarded the Acclaim 'Local History' Book of the Year for 2015.

Demand was sufficient to support a second printing.

Approximately half of this printing has been subscribed by pre-paid orders which are now ready for delivery. The remaining books will be sold on a first-come basis at the Madison County Library in Richmond concurrent with the pre-paid deliveries. The cost for the counter sales of the book will be $55.00. Sales will terminate when all books are sold out.

This will be a last chance to purchase a copy as the MCHS has no plans to pursue another printing. Anyone wishing to buy a copy, but cannot come to one of the scheduled sales can send an email request to the MCHS website at [email protected]. A reply will provide purchase instructions.

The MCHS certainly appreciates the support and enthusiasm shown for this book and sincerely thanks everyone who has participated in the reprinting process with statements of interest and purchases.

Questions may be directed to Tom Black at 859-582-6963.

This Thursday, June 16, at 6:30 at the Community Meeting Room of the Central Bank of Richmond, the Madison County Historical society will honor the first "CLASS" of local historians. We have established this recognition program and will honor 12 individuals and 3 organizations who have made extraordinary contributions for keeping our local history alive with research, documentation, preservation, etc, efforts.

A large turnout for the meeting will mean as much to the honorees as the token of recognition that we will present. Please make plans to attend.
