THIS is Berea

Our friends at Berea Postal Service collected over 2,700 pounds of food donated by generous Bereans during their annual food drive--a new record!

Our Delivery Day Crew, lead by James C. Kniskern, loaded hundreds of bags and bins of groceries into their trucks, vans, and SUVs for transport from the Post Office to the food bank. After the short drive they loaded it all inside our store room.

Then Peggy Robert's Sorting Crew's experienced hands took over to check, sort, and stock in everything--making quick work of it in the course of a single afternoon!

THIS is Berea--helping our neighbors in need. Our little city is special and it warms our hearts to be part of it. Thank you, Berea!

What an honor it was to talk with Tim Monroe on his podcast this week!

About Tim: he's been a Teacher, a Headmaster, a Development Director, a public radio professional, and Executive Director of an NGO. He's currently consulting to non-profit organizations, revising his first novel, and may be best known to Bereans for serving as the very first First Fellow of Berea College.

His podcast features compelling, in-depth conversations with people world-wide. If you'd like to hear about building a different kind of food bank you can listen here...

Tony Crachiolo is the volunteer Director of the Berea Kentucky Food Bank. The organization's goal is that hunger never finds a home in Berea. In ten years the food bank has more than doubled the people they reach and help. Tony and his team have flipped the food pantry paradigm in crucial ways that....

A Brutal Truth

7% of Kentucky seniors experience what researchers call "food insecurity." That's a term to gently state a brutal truth -- 7% of our elderly neighbors are going hungry.

This is unacceptable. That's why we do everything we can to help--our Senior Food Box Program provides more than a week's groceries month-in and month-out to over 200 Berea senior citizens 60+. Some months even that is not enough and we use our reserves to help.

We will not stand by, we will not rest until Hunger Finds No Home in Berea. Period.

Come and be Welcome

At Berea Food Bank you'll find no red tape, no embarrassing questions, and no judgement. Instead, we provide fresh, wholesome groceries with a smile to anyone in need of food assistance in our service area. And our volunteers approve every application for assistance right away.

All families will be given about a week's groceries. And seniors 60 and older are specially invited--we have Senior food boxes designed for their dietary needs (seniors should bring a proof of residence document--like a bill).

We offer curbside service. When you arrive please call us at 985-1903 and talk to one of our friendly volunteers and a few minutes later you'll drive home with groceries. Simple as that.

No phone? Just knock on our door. Unable to provide a proof of residence document? You will be given as much food as anyone else. No one is ever turned away from Berea Food Bank empty-handed. Period.

If you wish to support our work please donate online at bereaoutreach.org or mail a check to 108 Parkway Avenue, Berea, KY 40403.

A Seat at the Table

Our signature community outreach initiative, ReachOut, provides needed groceries delivered monthly to seniors residing at two affordable housing communities in Berea. But that's not all... the senior citizens it serves have agency and a voice in how the initiative works.

ReachOut is lead by resident Community Ambassadors who live and work in their community. They help their neighbors sign up, coordinate delivery dates with Berea Food Bank volunteers, arrange pick-up and delivery employing volunteers they recruit, organize volunteers in their community to do the door-to-door delivery work, and communicate the changing needs of their community to us.

It's a true partnership between Berea Food Bank and the communities we serve--a seat at the table for everyone.
