Hi, my name is Walter! I was recently found as a stray, and while my past is a bit of a mystery, one thing is certain—I am one of the sweetest boys you'll ever meet.

New places and big changes can make me a little timid at first, but every day I'm growing more confident and letting my personality shine. In fact, I've even found my voice here at the shelter, just in case anyone forgets to come say hello!

My favorite thing in the world is being close to my people. I'm a total snuggle bug who loves soaking up affection, and I'll happily lean in for pets and cuddles whenever I get the chance. I walk wonderfully on a leash, know my basic commands, am crate trained, and am fully potty trained, making me an easy companion to have around the house.

One thing they have learned is that I'm a clever guy—I can figure out how to open gates, so I'll need secure, double-latched fencing or extra care to make sure I stay safe.

I've been spending some time in a foster home, and I've been doing amazing! My foster family says I'm friendly with dogs, cats, and kids, and they've loved getting to know the real me.

I actually got my name, Walter, because I was found on Walter Lane, but my foster family has been calling me Rocky—and I answer to both!

Could I be your new best friend? 💙

Debo, Chong, and Honey Bunz are some of our longest-staying residents at the shelter. They've watched dog after dog get adopted and go home, while they wait for someone to choose them.

It's not for a lack of good looks. And it's certainly not for a lack of love. We know their person is out there. We're sure of it!

Through our foster-to-adopt program, you can bring one of these adorable dogs home, get to know their quirks and their love, and find out if you're their perfect pawtner. No pressure, just a chance to see if it's a match. 💛

⚠️ Graphic Content Warning ⚠️

We received a complaint regarding a tote containing cats and kittens who had been intentionally taped inside.

Tragically, two adult male cats and three kittens were found deceased. Three kittens survived.

These animals endured unimaginable suffering after being trapped inside the sealed tote in approximately 90°F weather for what we believe was several hours. At this time, we believe the tote was abandoned sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m on Monday, July 27.

The tote was found in close proximity to the shelter but was not on shelter property. If you were in the area of 1386 Richmond Rd. N., Berea, KY 40403 during that time and noticed anything unusual, suspicious, or out of place, please let us know what you saw. Even the smallest detail could help.

If you have any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please come forward. Your tip could help identify the person responsible.

No animal should ever have to endure this kind of cruelty.

If you know something, say something.

Hercules is finally home! 🏡💛

Before coming to the shelter, Hercules had been living in a boarded-up area, separated from everyone else in his previous home. Now, this sweet boy has a family of his own and a big backyard where he can run, play, and enjoy his new life.

Just look at that sweet smile. Happy tails, Hercules!

We’re happy to share that Miss Gigi has found her family and is doing so well! 🩷

Since being adopted, she is no longer taking anxiety medication and is attending weekly training classes. She is settling into her new life with the support, structure, and care she needs to thrive.

Seeing this sweet girl thriving in her new home is something worth celebrating. ✨

We also have several adoptable dogs that couldn't fit in the trailer to attend today's event. Don't worry—they'll still have their bios and information displayed at our booth, so you can learn all about them and ask our staff any questions if one catches your eye!

Join us at PetSmart in Richmond, tomorrow, July 25th! 🐾

Looking for your next best friend? Come see us at PetSmart in Richmond from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM!

We'll have 30 adoptable dogs with us, from long-term residents who have been patiently waiting for a family to newcomers who are just beginning their adoption journey. Whether you're looking for a dog around 30 pounds or a larger companion closer to 80 pounds, we'll have a variety of amazing pups hoping to meet you!

Here's a sneak peek at a few of the dogs you'll meet:

🐶 Josie – A sweet older girl looking for a patient home. She's great on a leash and gets along with both small and large dogs, especially those that are more laid-back. Josie does have separation anxiety, so she'd do best with someone who isn't gone for long hours.

🐺 Ryland – Every Husky fan needs to meet Ryland! He loves singing the song of his people, walks great on a leash, is very house trained, and has done well with female dogs and some males. He isn't in playgroups yet, and cats are definitely not his thing.

🤪 Goober – His name fits him perfectly! Goober is a goofy, happy boy who loves life.
He's house trained, walks well on a leash, enjoys car rides, and absolutely loves playing with other dogs—he'd make a fantastic companion for another playful pup. He even enjoys baths and playing in the water! Because of his energetic play style, he'd do best with older kids, and he would prefer a home without cats.

😎 Cavalier – Looking for a laid-back buddy? Cavalier is your guy. He's decent on a leash and prefers dog friends that enjoy relaxing rather than nonstop wrestling. Around playgroup, he likes to think of himself as the "fun police," making sure things don't get too rowdy! Once he's had a meal and a potty break, he's one of the chillest dogs around. He'd also prefer a cat-free home.

🤠 Outlaw – Outlaw is a cattle dog through and through, with plenty of personality to match! This handsome boy is incredibly smart, loves toys, and is highly food motivated, making him a fun dog to work with. He has a nice, moderate energy level, walks well on a leash, and always strikes the perfect pose for pictures. Outlaw is too energetic for cats and prefers calmer female dogs, though a gentle male companion could also be a good match. He's also done well with kids!

🧸 Rockie – Rockie is a well-mannered, well-behaved boy who is ready to find a family of his own. He's house trained, walks well on a leash, and absolutely loves squeaky toys! He has a moderate energy level and enjoys spending time with his people. Rockie would do best as the only pet, as he doesn't get along with other dogs or cats, and he'd be happiest in a home with older kids, if any. Rockie came to the shelter already neutered and microchipped, showing that someone cared for him at one point. Sadly, no one ever came back to bring him home. Now he's hoping someone new will give him the forever family he deserves.

These are just a few of the incredible dogs that will be joining us! Stop by, say hello, and you just might meet your new best friend.

🐾 Not ready to adopt? You can still make a huge difference! Stop by and meet some of our dogs, learn more about our adoption and foster programs, explore volunteer opportunities, and find out how donations can help the pups still waiting at the shelter.

We’re always grateful for donations of dog food, treats, toys, beds, leashes, collars, cleaning supplies, and other pet-related items. These contributions helps us provide comfort and care while they wait for their forever homes.

Skynyrd has left the shelter, and we couldn't be happier for him! ❤️⭐

His mom first came to the shelter as a volunteer to help walk dogs, but there was something special about Skynyrd. He captured her heart and is now officially part of the family, living his best life as the very best boy.

Seeing dogs like Skynyrd happy, loved, and settled into their new homes is what makes this work so meaningful. These pups deserve all the love, and we are grateful to be part of the journey that helps them find it.
