INDEPENDENCE DAY IN SCHRAALENBURGH

At the beginning of the nineteenth century Independence Day was often celebrated with public readings of the Declaration of Independence, speeches, and parades. The tradition of fireworks, which had begun in the late eighteenth century, continued to be a popular feature of the day. After the War of 1812 a sense of nationalism contributed to the growth of Fourth of July celebrations. Across the United States communities would hold events that often included artillery salutes, flag-raising ceremonies, and the singing of patriotic songs such as "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "America." Entire towns would turn out to celebrate Independence Day with a grand picnic and be entertained with speeches and orations invoking American liberty and democracy. There would be band concerts, games and contests for children and adults, and by the 1870s community baseball games. As many towns still do today the festivities were usually capped by a grand finale of evening fireworks.
