This evening, members of the Bergenfield Fire Department began receiving their new Motorola APX 8000 multiband portable radios. These radios are part of the $1 million AFG grant awarded to Bergenfield in May 2024.

This grant would not have been possible without the support of Congressman Josh Gottheimer, Mayor Amatorio, the Bergenfield Council, Administrator Gallo, then-Fire Chief Steven Naylis, and OEM Coordinator Ryan Shell.

We also look forward to receiving the fire department’s portion of the second grant, totaling more than $1 million, which Congressman Gottheimer announced in February of this year. Together, these grants will significantly enhance interoperability and modernize emergency communications for Bergenfield’s 9-1-1 Dispatch, EMS, Fire Department, and Police Department, helping bring our emergency services communications fully into the 21st century.

We sincerely appreciate Congressman Gottheimer’s continued support in securing and restoring these critical federal funds for Bergenfield’s emergency services.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers out there, especially the mothers of our firefighters and the mothers raising our firefighters’ children. Your love, strength, patience, and support do not go unnoticed. Whether you raised someone who answers the call or hold things together at home while our firefighters respond to emergencies, your sacrifices and dedication are deeply appreciated. Thank you for everything you do each and every day.

Izzy Infield, Captain of Prospect Fire Company, was among those sworn in as a new firefighter. Also among the new firefighters was Tim Tedesco, who began his fire service career as a Junior Firefighter with the Bergenfield Fire Department before moving out of the area.
We congratulate the new captains and firefighters on their accomplishments and wish them long, safe careers.

Just after 11:30 p.m. last night the Bergenfield Police 9-1-1 Center began receiving multiple calls reporting a fire on Lilac Street.
Chief of Department Zadrozna (740) reported that the fire was visible coming from a home in the dead end section of Tulip Street. Upon arrival, heavy fire was showing from the rear of one residence and had already extended to the the adjacent home. Chief Zadrozna established command and requested a Working Fire assignment.

In addition to the automatic aid response from Dumont, the Working Fire assignment brought Englewood Truck 1 and the New Milford FAST Team to the scene. Teaneck Fire Department Squad 24 was relocated to Alert Fire Headquarters to provide coverage for the borough during the incident. The Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps was also dispatched.

Dumont Car 211 and Engine 5, having just cleared a prior emergency in their town, responded immediately, arrived first due, and stretched an initial hand line. Bergenfield Engine 3 and Engine 1 arrived shortly thereafter, followed by Ladder 1, Rescue 1, and Engine 2.

Using all hands, arriving companies were assigned to deploy two additional hose lines, conduct primary and secondary searches of both residences for potential occupants, and check for further fire extension. Firefighters performed extensive overhaul operations, opening exterior walls on both structures to locate and extinguish any hidden pockets of fire.

No additional fire was discovered, and the incident was brought under control. Units began to scale back operations, with the final Bergenfield Fire Department unit clearing the scene at approximately 3:20 a.m.

Chief Zadrozna commended the efforts of all Bergenfield Fire Department personnel and expressed appreciation for the continued support and seamless cooperation of the assisting mutual aid agencies. Photos from social media and

The members of the Bergenfield Fire Department mourn the passing of former member Richard Addon.

Richard honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1971. He was the son of Bergenfield Fire Department member Andrew C. Addon, who was killed in the line of duty on November 7, 1969—a legacy of service that Richard would carry forward.

In 1971, Richard joined the Bergenfield Fire Department, becoming a member of Prospect Fire Company. He faithfully served the community there for three decades until 2001, when he transferred to Bergenfield Fire Company No. 2. During his time with Company 2, he attained the rank of Lieutenant, reflecting his dedication, leadership, and commitment to the department.

In addition to his operational roles, Richard served for many years as a Chaplain for the Bergenfield Fire Department, providing guidance, comfort, and support to his fellow members during both difficult and meaningful times.

Richard’s lifelong service—to his country, his community, and his fire department—stands as a testament to his character and devotion.

The members of the Bergenfield Fire Department extend their deepest condolences to the Addon family.

Rest in peace, brother. We will take it from here.
