UPDATE::
The incident occurred in the area of Sussex Road. The actor, identified as Jeffrey Zicchinella, 40 year old male out of Ridgefield Park, NJ was traveling in his vehicle when he exited his vehicle and assaulted the Rabbi. During the altercation. A nearby resident came to the assistance of the Rabbi who was being assaulted. As a result of the assault, both of our residents suffered minor injuries. Due to the quick actions of our residents and the Bergenfield Police Department, the male actor was taken into custody and charged with two (2) counts of simple assault and remanded to the Bergen County Jail. We are in consultation with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and stress that this is still an ongoing investigation. We take all reports of bias-motivated or hate-related incidents seriously and remain dedicated to ensuring that everyone in our Borough feels safe and respected. At this time, preliminary findings indicate that this appears to be an isolated incident. We want to assure our residents that there is no ongoing threat to the community. In an abundance of caution, I have ordered our officers to conduct extra patrols around residences and synagogues.

At approximately 2:00 PM today, a faith leader was assaulted in Bergenfield. Thanks to the quick response from residents in the area and the Bergenfield Police Department, the assailant was stopped and taken into custody.
The matter is being investigated so please allow the police time to do their job. At this time, we believe this to be a random, isolated incident.
We extend our concern and support to those affected and stand in solidarity with our local faith community. We remain committed to ensuring the safety, unity, and well-being of all residents.
