Our visitor found the highest seat in Berger. Vultures actually use rising warm air to help them soar, so this guy may be enjoying our hot weather more than we are.

Monday Photo's 🌽
🌾 BERGER HAS A BIG BACKYARD — AND A BIG BOTTOM!
When most people think of Berger, they think of our little town along Highway 100.
But take a drive down Highway B and you'll discover an entirely different side of Berger.
Welcome to the Berger Bottoms.
Stretching from Berger toward New Haven along the Missouri River is an enormous expanse of rich river-bottom land — thousands upon thousands of acres of farm fields, levees, wetlands, conservation areas and wildlife habitat.
And when we say BIG, we mean it.
For perspective, the entire island of Manhattan, New York, is only about 22.7 square miles — approximately 14,500 acres.
Look at the photo below and imagine Manhattan sitting out there among our fields. It gives you an incredible perspective on just how much open land surrounds our little community.
The Berger Bottoms have also witnessed some remarkable history, including the Great Flood of 1993, which dramatically changed portions of the Missouri River landscape.
Today, farmers continue working this incredibly productive land while conservation areas provide habitat for wildlife along the Missouri River.
Berger itself may be small.
But we've got one heck of a backyard. 🌽🚜

🇺🇸 As our flags remain at half-staff through sunset Tuesday, September 1, by order of the President in honor of Dolly Parton, we thought a little music was appropriate for today's small-town reminder…

Funny thing about small towns…
Some people see everything.
Most people see everything.
Who are we kidding? EVERYBODY sees EVERYTHING.

So, if you're reading this and suddenly thinking, “Wait… are they talking about me?”
We might be. We might not be.
But just to be safe… please stop doing whatever it is you're doing that is keeping Grandpa by the phone.
People are seeing it.
People are calling about it.
People are reporting it. (All night long).
And now a whole bunch of other people have to spend their time dealing with it.
We're a tiny town, folks. There aren't enough of us here to be this busy. 🥴
Nobody wants to see it. Nobody wants trouble. And we certainly don't need enough material to turn Berger into a documentary.
So, whoever needs to hear this:
Please. Just stop. We're asking nicely.
And everybody else—keep looking out for your neighbors and your community.
Let's keep Berger peaceful, safe, and just boring enough that Netflix never calls. ❤️

Wooly Bear Alert on Hwy B...All spotted have been solid black.

Watch the sidewalk on your evening walk this weekend. The first woolly bears are crossing, and a woolly bear in the road is telling you something.

A caterpillar you catch marching in late August has quit eating for the year. It is house-hunting. Somewhere under loose bark, a woodpile, or the leaf pile you never got around to moving, it will curl up for the winter and do the thing almost nothing else in your yard can do. It freezes. Nearly solid, heart stopped, ice between its cells, all winter long.

Then in spring it thaws out, walks off, and turns into an Isabella tiger moth as if none of that happened.

So the first crossing you see is a season marker as real as a turned leaf. The little wooly bear knows what the calendar is about to do. 🍂

🌟 Something exciting is coming to Berger! 🌟
We’re getting ready to launch BLAST — Building Leaders and Strengthening Tomorrow, a youth leadership program open to ALL Berger youth, including public school, private school and homeschool students! Kids will participate in fun Mini Mayor and Mini Alderman elections, learn how city government works, build leadership and public-speaking skills, volunteer at community events, help with park cleanups, plan holiday activities and learn how they can make a difference in their hometown. We’ll also welcome guest speakers from all walks of life — farmers, beekeepers, business owners, elected officials, first responders, healthcare professionals, educators and more — to share their careers and experiences with our youth. 💙💛
📣 Our first meeting date will be announced in October! We’re excited to give Berger’s kids a place to learn, lead, serve, make friends and have a voice in their community. Strong youth. Strong leaders. Stronger Berger. ⭐
Meetings are free and the tentative day is the second Wednesday of each month at 4:30 pm. All are welcome to help choose a day or time that works best for everyone.

🚌🍎HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL! 🍎🚌
Our kids are back on the roads this morning, so please SLOW DOWN, PAY ATTENTION & WATCH FOR SCHOOL BUSES!
🛑 When the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out — STOP! DO NOT PASS THE BUS.
Give yourself a few extra minutes and help keep our kids safe.

🚌🚛 BACK-TO-SCHOOL ROAD SAFETY REMINDER! 🚛🚌

As our students head back to school tomorrow, our buses are back on the roads! This year, we also want to bring extra attention to the increased number of large trucks traveling throughout our area.

With school buses, large trucks, morning commuters, and students all sharing our roadways, please slow down, stay alert, and allow extra time for your morning and afternoon commutes.

🚛 Give large trucks plenty of space and stay out of their blind spots.
🛑 Always stop for school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign.
👀 Watch carefully for students entering or crossing the roadway.
📵 Put the phone down and keep your attention on the road.

More traffic means we all need to use a little extra patience and caution. Please help us keep our students, bus drivers, truck drivers, and community safe as we begin another school year! 💙🐾
