It is with deep regret that the Berkeley Heights Fire Department announces the passing of retired Firefighter Clem Manganelli. Clem proudly served the Berkeley Heights Fire Department from 1969 to 2004, dedicating 35 years to protecting our community. His commitment to the department and the Township of Berkeley Heights will be remembered with gratitude and respect. Before his years of service to our community, Clem proudly served his nation in the United States Navy during the Korean War era, from 1954 to 1958. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged. In addition to his military and fire service, Clem served the Berkeley Heights community as a school crossing guard. He was employed by Sears & Roebuck in Irvington, was a longtime senior member of the Mount Carmel Society, and a lifelong parishioner of Little Flower Parish. The members of the Berkeley Heights Fire Department extend their heartfelt condolences to Clem’s family, friends, and loved ones. We are grateful for his many years of dedicated service to our department, our community, and our nation. All services are to be held privately.

🚒 During Fire Prevention Week, members from BHFD visited Diamond Hill Montessori School FF/EMT James Rubino dressed in his gear so the children could see firsthand how firefighters help in a fire or emergency. Some of the lessons presented were conducting fire drills at home and how to recognize an exit in a commercial building. Fire safety outreach is one of the main ways we’ve been able to keep down the number of lives lost to fire and help reduce the number of serious fires we have as well. Fire safety is a timeless lesson that can and should be learned at any age.

🚗 Yesterday afternoon, the Berkeley Heights Fire Department responded to a reported head-on motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Glenside Avenue and Glenside Road in the Watchung Reservation. Four people were injured in the crash. Rescue-1 utilized the HURST Jaws of Life to improve access to a patient in the rear seat of one of the vehicles. Engine-4 handled spilled fluids from the crash and prevented them from entering a nearby catch basin, helping protect the waterways and natural environment within the Watchung Reservation. Additional agencies assisting with patient care and medical transport included the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad, Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, and Union County EMS

⛈️ The NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10PM tonight. The primary threat will be wind gusts up to 70 MPH, hail and frequent lightning is possible.
💨 Damaging winds are a possible threat for this event so be sure to secure loose items in your yard.
⚡ Any storm can contain lightning strikes and brief heavy downpours.
📲Have multiple ways to receive warnings, should one be issued!
🏠 When alerted to a storm, get inside a sturdy building immediately
🚫 Stay away from windows once indoors
🚗 If a building isn’t nearby, get inside a vehicle

It is with deep regret that the Berkeley Heights Fire Department announces the passing of former firefighter Dominick Yannotta.
Dominick proudly served the Berkeley Heights Fire Department during the 1970s, dedicating his time to serving and protecting the community he called home.
A lifelong resident of Berkeley Heights, Dominick also proudly served in the Army National Guard from 1968 to 1974 before receiving his honorable discharge. He worked for many years as a Marine Hydraulic Engineer with Cunningham Marine Hydraulics in Hoboken before later joining F.S. Supply Co. in Keyport, NJ.
The members of the Berkeley Heights Fire Department extend their deepest condolences to Dominick’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We are grateful for his service to our community and our nation.

⛈️ A cold front approaches this afternoon. Forecast guidance is in excellent agreement and showing a developing squall line right along and ahead of the cold front which pushes through mainly during the early to late evening hours. Strong storms, to a few severe storms are possible. The primary threat will be damaging wind gusts of around 60 mph, with the greatest threat across NE NJ.

On Sunday, October 11th, the Berkeley Heights Fire Department (BHFD) responded to four incidents, including a rollover crash on Interstate 78 East near Exit 43.
With poor weather conditions associated with Post-Tropical Cyclone Isaias making driving more challenging, a vehicle crashed and overturned onto the center median. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured and was able to exit the vehicle without assistance. Modern vehicle safety features, combined with the driver wearing a seat belt, played an important role in helping protect the driver.
Other responses throughout the day included assisting the New Providence Volunteer Fire Department with a smoke investigation inside a residence, investigating a malfunctioning carbon monoxide alarm, and responding to an accidental fire alarm activation caused by someone blow-drying their hair.
BHFD reminds everyone to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution when driving in adverse weather conditions. Always wear your seat belt, and never drive faster than conditions safely allow.

The Berkeley Heights Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank everyone who joined us for our “HotRods on Hamilton” car show fundraiser last Saturday. 🔥 On Wednesday, October 7th, B.H.F.D. responded to four incidents. One of the calls was a car fire at Drift Road and Plainfield Avenue in Watchung, where B.H.F.D. worked alongside the Watchung Volunteer Fire Department The two departments worked together to extinguish the fire and prevent approximately two gallons of motor oil and gasoline from entering the storm sewer. Two of the other incidents involved motor vehicle crashes on Interstate 78. Both crashes resulted in minor injuries. B.H.F.D. and the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad responded to both incidents and provided care to those involved. In addition to responding to emergencies, B.H.F.D. visited Union Village Montessori School in observance of Fire Prevention Week. Students learned about the importance of practicing fire drills at home with their families, recognizing potential fire hazards, and knowing how to safely exit a building during an emergency.
