The League of Filipino Students at UC Berkeley Chapter Organizing Committee (COC) is an anti-imperialist grassroots organization of Filipino student youth (and our allies) committed to fighting for National Democracy in the Philippines. LFS-UC Berkeley (COC) is an anti-imperialist grassroots organization of Filipino student youth (and our allies) committed to fighting for National Democracy in the
Philippines. We believe that our homeland will never be truly democratic or free until it is liberated from the control of U.S. imperialism, local landlords, big capitalists, and the corrupt politicians. The LFS started in 1977 as the Alyansa ng mga Mag-aaral Laban sa Pagtaas ng Tuition Fee (Alliance of Students Against Tuition Fee Increase). It gathered the militant students and student organizations committed to the protection of the student’s democratic rights. The LFS played a crucial role in dismantling military presence in the campuses and in the restoration of student publications and student councils. In 1982, the LFS formally declared itself as a national democratic mass organization committed to advance the national democratic aspirations of the people. Since then, the organization continued to progress and was able to expand to almost every region in the country. In 1997, a group of Filipino American youth and students decided to form a chapter of LFS in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1998, they decided to base the organization at San Francisco State University. Since the establishment of LFS-SFSU, it has grown to continue to support the Filipino community here in the United States and back in our homeland, the Philippines. In October 2020, an LFS chapter organizing committee at UC Berkeley was formed, making it the second of two international LFS chapters. LFS-UCB endeavors to deepen our understanding of the concrete connections between Filipinos in the United States and in the Homeland by studying and propagating the rich and proud revolutionary heritage of our People’s continuing struggle for liberation and National Democracy. We take it upon ourselves as youth and students to renew our Filipino culture and history, define our present situation as Filipinos all over the world, come to a proper understanding of how to remedy our current condition, and take action. Armed with the lessons of the past, and the unwavering commitment to advance the national democratic aspirations of the Filipino people, the League of Filipino Students (LFS), together with the Filipino masses, will continue to struggle for true liberation and a democracy which will genuinely serve the Filipino masses. Any student in any high school, college, university —as well as young educators and teachers— that agrees with the goals, principles, and program can join LFS! In the spirit of Internationalism, any non-Filipino student who meets the qualification provided for in the previous item may join.
