Berkeley People's Park

Berkeley People's Park Going on 52 years!!!! People's Park was created in Spring 1969 by transforming a muddy, trashy parking lot that the U.C. Even killed. But The People persisted.

had put there over a year before after forcibly acquiring all the homes/property and demolishing everything. The People of the actual community tired of the blight and so dug in and turned it into their own park, with flowers, trees, gardens, art and playgrounds, working and playing together. The Officials (U.C., city, police, state and Nat'l Guard) then tried to take it back -- escalating their f

orce and violence until the entire city was invaded by the military and placed under Martial Laws. One of the very few times any such thing has happened in the United States... at least since the Civil War. People were tear-gassed, beaten, shot, arrested. Until many came, from all over the country and the world, and a massive demonstration gathered and marched to the Park. In the years since, from time to time, U.C. has attempted or accomplished further "proprietary" incursions into the park, unilaterally. Most of these have been successfully challenged, resisted and/or countered. By some. Over so much time, it's become less clear and certain just who is "the community" either of or for this park. Now more than ever before. U.C. is well along specific planning to reclaim the property, to "develop" it by building a large "student housing" building, along with a much smaller. building referred to as "housing for formerly homeless", to be operated by a separate nonprofit organization. The plans include some areas of so-called "open space" and concessionary features intended to "commemorate" the park, its significance and history.

Hey, folks, it's been awhile. Heck, just a bit over 15 years ago a handful of us were at a table in The Med and we decided it was time for The Park to enter the social media fray. Thus, this account and FB page were created. In those earliest of times, it was mostly Gina S. (M. DeLacour's partner) and myself adding content and admining.

Well, you know how things go. Another handful of people figured that *they* wanted and ought to have the/a. Park Page. They didn't even tell us they were doing that. But it was already pretty obvious that they weren't much participating with or contributing to the Berkeley Peoples Park page. And just look, they're still having huffy, contentious scrapples with just WHO gets to tell the REAL story and be the "authentic" voice of/for The Park! According to them.

Back in the day, I was here in Berkeley and got involved in creating that park. Hands on, too.. Was there on Bloody Thursday. Did the big rally and march from the Annex to the Park, etc. Around that same time, I was also working with The Berkeley Barb newspaper, the Berkeley Tribe newspaper and The Print Mint underground comix. Even did a color front cover for the U.C. magazine, The Pelican, in '71.. Hung out in the Park, on camous, on The Ave. in The Med and Harcastles, etc. And I don't seem to recall most any of them here then. Go figure.

But they never mention me, either. How do things like that go among The People?

So now, after this original page, Berkeley People's Park, by now we got People's Park Community, and People's Park Garden and Peoples Park Berkeley! LOL! Have I missed any more?

Oh, People Spark may almost be ready to launch, and with a couple of surprises! Stay tuned, stay "connected", stay real and enjoy ourselves, each other and what we can choose together.

While it may not be a living bear, this snow sculpture captured by Lake Tahoe State Parks staff at Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park is just as adorable.
