We’re signing people up for CalFresh!

Starting this month, anyone in need can come to our daytime drop-in center and receive support from our staff to determine if they are eligible for CalFresh. If it’s a yes, our staff will guide them through the process of filling out the CalFresh application for benefits.

This sign-up initiative is in partnership with Alameda Food Bank and we thank the food bank for keeping the people of Berkeley fed.

Moving in!

Daniel, our housing navigator, has been busy.

He’s helped 14+ people move out of our shelters and into their own apartments this summer.

We miss them, but we are so happy they’re back home. It’s a good thing they can visit us anytime; and we can pop in on them too.

HOME IS HERE

It’s summer at our shelters and we’re getting a lot of permanent housing matches for our residents.

A large part of moving those who are with us through homelessness is helping them regain the confidence to rebuild a sense of home for themselves.

Stop by Dorothy's Closet located @ 2425 Channing Way in Berkeley Wed - Sat from noon - 6 pm and say hello to Nico, our store manager.

She’ll show you what’s new on the racks and help you find just the right outfits for the rest of the summer.

Best part? Dorothy’s Closet is a Rebuilding Together East Bay Network and Dorothy Day House project. Every sale supports the development of programs that bring free clothing, meals and shelter options to our unhoused neighbors.

We have new vehicles!

Spotted our new Dorothy Day House truck and van rolling around the Bay yet?

Thanks to the Del E. Webb Foundation we’ve got new wheels. Every day we’re using these vehicles to pick up food donations from places like Berkeley Food Network, Kaiser Permanente in Oakland and Target in Albany to keep fresh, hot meals coming for our daytime drop-in center visitors.

We’re also using our new wheels to deliver meals cooked in our Center Street kitchen to our hotel shelters on University Ave and San Pablo Ave as well as to Options Recovery’s hotel shelter.

Our summertime teen volunteers are here!

25+ teens

from

12+ Bay Area high schools

are with us for the summer.

They are cooking and serving meals to our unhoused neighbors @ our daytime drop-in center in downtown Berkeley and helping out at Dorothy’s Closet, our thrift store initiative with Rebuilding Together.

Thank you to the Bentley School, Alameda Science and Technology Institute, Head Royce, Berkeley High School, Monte Vista High School, Oakland Military Institute, Alhambra High School, St. Mary’s College High School, El Cerrito High School, Bishop O’Dowd, Oakland Tech, Albany High School, and College Prep for sharing your students with us.

We are so excited to have them!

We’re getting so many housing matches right now and moving lots of people from our shelters into their own studio and one bedroom apartments all around Alameda county.

News!

Our county’s homeless population is decreasing.

Initial point-in-time data released by Alameda County indicates a 13% drop in people experiencing homelessness since last point-in-time survey in 2024.

Shopped!

725+ people came out to St. Ambrose Church and shopped the thrift sales benefiting us May 30th - 31st and June 13th -14th.

We raised $9K+ and every purchase helps us continue to provide the 550+ people we reach every day with the shelter, services and support they need to get back home.

St. Ambrose Church, the Eviction Defense Center, our Board, staff and volunteers, and everyone who spread the word made these sales happen.

We ❤️ our community!
