Let the Land Breathe! At Last!
Join us to honor the Indigenous vision of removing the concrete and restoring a Sacred Site to balance and honor.
After years of activism and organizing, court cases, fundraising, planning, dreaming, sweat, and tears, we are happy to announce that the removal of the pavement at West Berkeley Shellmound is beginning.
Please join us for this herstoric moment!
Gather at West Berkeley Shellmound
1900 4th st, So called Berkeley
Tuesday 5/5 12-2pm
Bring a chair, waterbottle, sun protection and intention for the land.
Removing the concrete and daylighting Strawberry Creek furthers our vision for cultural revitalization, securing a sacred space for the Lisjan people in perpetuity. We are making possible a return to ceremony and ensuring the future where our next generations can learn and thrive directly with land.

"Strawberry Creek played a pivotal role in people’s daily lives until European settlers f'd it up. Before colonization, the creek thrived for millennia alongside and thanks to Ohlone people. The Huchiun Ohlone thoughtfully managed the riparian habitat they benefited from, fully aware of its fortuitous, delicate nature...."

Why reverting a largely culverted waterway to a more natural state isn't just good for the creek.

🐚 Shellmound 2 Shellmound 🐚 :
Thank you to all who continue to show up to uplift the ancestors of this Land, who uplift the spirit of the Land, Water, our animal relatives who have also been displaced by development and diversion of creek ways. The Land, the people, the world need our prayers. Special thanks to all who supported our safety, medics, security. Special thanks to the danzantes who danced 3 miles from the oldest village site to the largest. Special thanks to our powerful speakers, organizers behind the scenes but most importantly our matriarchs, the legacy of Wounded Knee DeOcampo, our community leaders and each and everyone one who joined us with your steps and prayers.
Special thanks to our storytellers through media, photography and live podcasts.

Let the Land Breathe!

Rematriation is an ongoing process. Land Return was just a first step.

This Indigenous Peoples Day, we are officially launching the Let the Land Breathe Campaign to raise $1Million dollars to begin the restoration of the West Berkeley Shellmound.

The Lisjan people have fought for decades and waited for centuries for this moment: the rematriation of our oldest sacred site, the West Berkeley Shellmound. Now that the land has been returned, the process of healing begins.

Removing the concrete and daylighting Strawberry Creek furthers our vision for cultural revitalization, securing a sacred space for the Lisjan people in perpetuity. We are making possible a return to ceremony and ensuring the future where our next generations can learn and thrive directly with land.

Join us in making this monumental vision for Indigenous futures a reality!
