Since the opening of the school year, there has been an increasing amount of threats against our public schools in our state and across the country. This is creating a heightened level of fear in our school children, parents and school administrations. The recent school shooting at Alapachee High School in Georgia appears to have added to these fears. Here in Connecticut, during the past week, numerous school systems have been forced to shut down due to threats. They are varied, and at this time appear to be isolated incidents. Several juvenile arrests have been made in some communities here in Connecticut this week, and all are unconnected.
With all of this in mind, the Berlin, Connecticut Police Department will be presenting a more concerted, high visibility, security conscious campaign in our schools. Patrols and all of our personnel, have been directed, when available, to stop in to our schools and conduct high visibility patrols and building walk throughs. While doing so, we will be sure to “Greet and Meet” with students and staff.
Please note that we do not have any credible threats here in Berlin at this time. This is a preventative measure. But the heightened state of fear among students, parents and staff is real and appears to be rising throughout the state. With a visible presence and strong security posture, our department will continue to provide a safe learning environment for our school children. ~ Chief McNally
