Last night the Museum of Eastern Shore Culture at Salisbury University was packed with guests eager to learn about Maryland's official state boat: the Skipjack! In partnership with the Museum of Eastern Shore Culture, the Beach to Bay Heritage Area and Skipjack Heritage, Inc. an Evening of Skipjacks was held at the museum, bringing together three famous skipjack captains to discuss life on these iconic working boats and answer questions from the audience. Additionally, attendees watched the documentary Voices of the Skipjack, learned about the history of Maryland’s state boat, explored the contributions of Black watermen with Dr. Clara Small, and learned about the Triple Crown of Skipjack Racing.

Last week, the Buffalo Soldier Living History Site Co. (also known as The Outpost) was at the Salisbury Zoo where Deborah Scott gave a presentation on Buffalo Solider history, their role in US history, and common misconceptions about their legacy. Zoo staff also shared information on the American bison. It was a wonderful collaboration that combined history and wildlife education in a playful way for all ages!
