Probationary and Cadets Development

Training and Skill Development:
Over the past few weeks, the Town of Berlin Fire Departments Cadets and Probationary members have been hard at work learning new skills and strengthening the ones they have developed throughout their journey with the department.

Recent Training Activities:
On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, members practiced hydrant operations, apartment-building hose packs, and standpipe use. On August 11, 2026, they returned to training focused on building confidence with Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus equipment. Members worked their way through a maze, locating a victim, and practiced removing the victim from the building safely.

Building Toward Service:
Training like this provides an important foundation for becoming a certified firefighter. These skills help prepare members to serve the community and may also open the door to future opportunities within the fire service.

“Starting tomorrow, Monday June 22nd, all 4 departments are going to be training at various locations around town. This means you may see multiple fire apparatus and vehicles in your neighborhood conducting operations. This training is meant to increase the efficiency and safety of our operations. These scenarios should be a short period of time at each location. If a vehicle is in the way of your route, in front of your house, or has equipment in the roadway, please be patient. As with any of our training, feel free to find a safe location and talk to your local volunteers about what we are training on.”

Town of Berlin Fire Department Supports School Field Day

On Friday, June 12, members of the Town of Berlin Fire Department joined the Connecticut State Police and other town volunteers for Griswold Elementary Schools Field Day.

The Fire Department displayed South Kensington’s Engine 12 and provided information on their tools and equipment. Firefighters demonstrated to students how they dress in their full personal protective equipment and students were able to explore the fire truck and participate in a question-and-answer interactions with the firefighters.

The Fire Department brought coolers, ice, and a misting fan to help keep students comfortable and cool throughout the event.

TOBFD provided standby coverage to support the CT State Police with the landing and take off of their helicopter, also on display for students to visit.

Great appreciation to Griswold School for the invitation to participate.

Here are the first pictures from the construction of Engine 7 out of East Berlin Company 1. The firetruck was approved for purchase in January of 2023. This begins the process of building the apparatus; we will keep you updated!

The South Kensington Fire Department, along with East Berlin, Berlin, Kensington Fire Departments, as well as the Southington and Westfield Fire Departments will be conducting a large scale drill. It will be on Monday 5/11/26 from 7pm to 10pm. This drill will be focused on supplying water for fires in our non hydranted areas of town. The drill will be in the area of Cross Creek, Elton Rd, Kensington Rd, and Orchard Rd. You will see many different firetrucks in the area shuttling water. There may also be a disruption to normal traffic, especially on Cross Creek and Elton
