On Thursday August 13th we hosted a Battle of the Fire Houses blood drive. The departments were able to fulfill over 150 percent of our goal and brought in over 60 donors. Berlin Volunteer Fire Department East Berlin Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. Kensington Fire-Rescue Chief Hrubiec and his wife Kelly were able to stop by and donate on the way to their anniversary dinner.

Congratulations to our three newest members on receiving their new black helmets. This signifies their completion of the Fire One and Fire Two classes. They have also completed required Hazardous Materials training. They have now transitioned to full active members.

The South Kensington Fire Department, along with East Berlin, Berlin, Kensington Fire Departments, as well as the Southington and Westfield Fire Departments will be conducting a large scale drill. It will be on Monday 5/11/26 from 7pm to 10pm. This drill will be focused on supplying water for fires in our non hydranted areas of town. The drill will be in the area of Cross Creek, Elton Rd, Kensington Rd, and Orchard Rd. You will see many different firetrucks in the area shuttling water. There may also be a disruption to normal traffic, especially on Cross Creek and Elton

Yesterday, Town of Berlin and Southington Fire Departments were simultaneously dispatched to Ragged Mountain for two lost hikers with a potential health issue. It was difficult to communicate with the patients due to a language barrier. Once the victims were determined to be in Southington, the command post was centralized there. The South Kensington Fire Department provided ten members who actively worked in the woods moving two patients who required rescue. SKFD, the Town of Berlin's other three fire companies, and our mutual aid partners worked tirelessly for hours in the snow and cold to remove the two patients. The patients, who could not speak English, were assisted by SKFD Firefighter Carlos Lorenzo. FF Lorenzo's ability to calmly and effectively communicate in Spanish was crucial to the rescue.
