In the 2 years since the Hawthorne Fire the woods have healed. The faint, inconspicuous scars that remain on Lamentation Mountain are rapidly being erased by nature. While visible reminders of the fire continue to fade, the memories and emotions of those days continue burn strong. Today we reflect on those memories. We reflect on the dedication, the sacrifice, the tears shed in remembrance of our colleague and friend, Firefighter Robert Sharkevich.

*10/20/2026 Structure Fire*

At 13:16 Berlins dispatch center received a call for a possible structure fire with smoke coming from a building located at 170 Wilks Pond Road. The first arriving fire officer found a 2 story residential structure with a smoke condition. Firefighters made entry and found an active fire in the basement extending into the first and second floors. The fire was quickly knocked down, and a search of the home confirmed it was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Assistance was provided on scene by our Task Force 51 partners and no injuries were reported during the incident.
The Berlin Fire Marshals Office is investigating the cause with assistance from the State Fire Marshals Office.

At 20:15 this evening all 4 fire companies were dispatched to Briar Patch Drive for the report of a fire in the garage of a residential.
Arriving fire officers were met by the residents in front of the home and an active fire was found involving contents in the garage. The fire was knocked down using a portable water can, arriving firefighters removed the burning contents and extinguished remaining hot spots.
There were two occupants home at the time of the fire, one resident experienced symptoms of smoke inhalation and was evaluated by EMS and released on scene. No pets were in the home and there were no injuries to firefighters.
The home sustained minor structural damage and there was no displacement to the residents. The Berlin Fire Marshals Office is investigating, a large capacity snowblower battery that was found may have contributed to the start of the fire.

Companies 3 and 2 worked a serious accident which affected both sides of Route 5 this evening.

At 20:41 dispatch reported a multi car accident with unknown injuries in the area of Route 5 and Route 9. Arriving resources found a 2 car accident on the Southbound side of Route 5 with one vehicle on fire and an injured person in the roadway. Firefighters extinguished the fire and one patient was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. There was an extensive amount of debris and oil on the roadway, which was closed to Southbound traffic while first responders operated and the vehicles were removed. The roadway has since reopened.
