Hi Bern Co Dems

I’m asking our members to take a few minutes this week and submit a public comment defending Chaco Canyon.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park is one of the most important cultural landscapes in North America — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a living ancestral homeland for Pueblo peoples. In 2023, then-Interior Secretary Deb Haaland established a 10-mile protective buffer that withdrew more than 336,000 acres of surrounding public land from new oil and gas leasing for 20 years. That decision was the result of years of Tribal leadership and public advocacy, and it remains one of the clearest examples of what strong, values-driven leadership looks like for New Mexico.

That buffer is now under direct attack. The Bureau of Land Management has released a draft environmental assessment proposing three options: keep the full 10-mile protection, shrink it to five miles, or eliminate it entirely. The public has only until July 29 to comment.

This matters. Chaco is part of our shared New Mexico story. When Tribal Nations and the All Pueblo Council of Governors say these protections must stay in place, we should stand with them. Defending the buffer also means defending the kind of leadership Secretary Haaland showed — and the kind we need as she runs to be our next Governor.

Here’s how to act:
1. Go to the official BLM project page:https://eplanning.blm.gov/Project-Home/?id=D949F582-402D-F111-8341-001DD804183B
2. Click Participate Now.
3. Submit a comment supporting the full 10-mile buffer created under Secretary Haaland and opposing any reduction or revocation.

You can also sign the New Mexico Wild petition, but the official BLM comment is the one that goes into the formal record.

Comments close July 29. This is a clear chance for Bernalillo County Democrats to show up for Tribal sovereignty, cultural protection, and the New Mexico we want to hand to the next generation.

Do it today.

Happy Juneteenth, Bern Co!

Today we celebrate freedom and Black joy across this country. While some Republicans down South are trying to wipe out majority-Black congressional districts to cheat in the 2026 election, we’re choosing to show up, celebrate, and build together.

Tonight, ABQ is throwing the biggest Juneteenth celebration yet at Civic Plaza & Convention Center from 5–11 PM (FREE). Headlined by Grammy winner Nivea with live performances, inspiring speakers, 3-on-3 basketball tournament with Kenny Thomas, local vendors, delicious food trucks, fun kids area, and even a FREE Dental & Health Clinic during the day.

Theme: From Freedom to Prosperity.

This is how we honor history while building opportunity, unity, and prosperity for our community.

DPBC stands with Albuquerque’s Black community. Bring your friends and let’s pack Civic Plaza!

See you tonight 🎉

This Saturday, June 13th, the DPNM LGBTQIA+ Caucus will proudly march in Albuquerque Pride — one of the oldest continuously running Pride events in the entire nation — as it celebrates its historic 50th anniversary! Expect a powerful, joyful day filled with music, color, community, and fierce celebration of how far we’ve come while continuing the fight for full equality.

That same energy will be on full display this weekend. DPBC warmly invites everyone — allies, friends, family, and community members — to walk with us!

Register here to walk with the Caucus: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdMtVdYFxYr3ENUyCsVw9OAmvjOB0yNr2bUHLZRQ_eo83RB8Q/viewform

Parade Details for Walkers:
