Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, we recognize the men and women of Sandoval County Fire Rescue who answer the call no matter the hour, no matter the challenge.

From structure fires to medical emergencies, wildland deployments to technical rescues, our firefighters serve with courage, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to this community. Their willingness to step forward when others step back does not go unnoticed.

But appreciation shouldn’t be reserved for just one day.

Every day, our firefighters train, prepare, and respond with professionalism and heart for protecting lives, property, and the places we call home.

To our firefighters: thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your commitment to something bigger than yourselves.

On the evening of April 29, 2026, 28 students from agencies and departments across New Mexico graduated from the University of New Mexico EMS Academy Paramedic Program. Sandoval County Fire Rescue was honored to have Firefighter M. Toya among this group. M. Toya’s dedication, passion and drive to better serve her community continue to set the standard.

Over the course of this rigorous program, students completed 32 weeks of classroom instruction, 5 weeks of hospital clinical rotations, and 7 weeks of field internships. The next step will be National Registry testing followed by department-specific certification.

These newly trained paramedics represent a critical investment in the future of emergency medical services, strengthening advanced life support capabilities and improving patient care across the communities they serve. Sandoval County Fire Rescue also continues to support the growth of EMS professionals with in our organization, with additional members currently testing for the selection of the next UNM EMSA paramedic cohort.

Congratulations to all of the graduates on this major accomplishment and the impact you’re about to make in the field.
