πŸ† Celebrating 8 Years of Dedication! πŸ†

This week, Ms. Stephanie presented Mr. Angus with an award honoring his incredible 8 years of service to New Jersey Audubon! πŸŽ‰

Mr. Angus wears so many hats here at Scherman Hoffman β€” he runs our Linden Hawkrise programs, leads our WSB Youth Birding Team, and is a beloved teacher in our Summer Camp program. His passion for connecting young people with birds and nature has shaped countless campers and young birders over the years.

Thank you, Mr. Angus, for your dedication, your energy, and everything you've poured into our programs and our community. Here's to many more years of birding adventures together! πŸ¦…πŸ’š

πŸͺ§ Look for our new sign!

We've put up a brand-new sign, now visible from both directions and located right across from our driveway β€” so it's easier than ever to know where to turn. Another summer of Camp at Scherman Hoffman wraps up this Friday, and none of it would have been possible without our amazing counselors and staff. Your patience, creativity, and passion for nature turned every day into an adventure β€” from muddy boots to wide-eyed wildlife discoveries.

The memories, the learning, and the experiences you helped create will last our campers a lifetime. Thank you for showing up with energy and heart all season long! πŸ’šπŸ¦‹πŸŒ³

🌲 Trail crew to the rescue! πŸͺ“

This section of Patriots Path, just west of the Dogwood Trail, had an obstruction blocking the way β€” until Will and volunteer Skip stepped in to clear a path through, keeping the trail open and safe for hikers and wildlife-watchers alike.

Huge thanks to Skip and our dedicated staff for keeping Scherman Hoffman's trails in great shape! πŸ™Œ

πŸ“Έ What did our campers spot this week? πŸ¦‰πŸΈ

Every week at Nature Camp, our young explorers keep a running species list of everything they find β€” birds overhead, frogs in the pond, insects under logs, and wildflowers along the trail. It's amazing to see how sharp their eyes get by Friday!

Check out last weeks list from our Catching Critters Weekβ€” nature detectives in training! πŸ”πŸŒΏ

Please join us in welcoming Ben Barkley as our new Program Director at Scherman Hoffman! πŸ¦…πŸŒΏ

For Ben, this role is a full-circle moment. Born and raised in Basking Ridge, his love of nature took flight on a 2007 trip to Costa Rica, when a trogon perched right over the trail caught his eye β€” and he was hooked for life. Ben started birding every chance he got, eventually finding his way to Scherman Hoffman, where a conversation with then-Director Mike Anderson led him to join a team of teens competing in the World Series of Birding the very next day. From there, Ben became a familiar face at the sanctuary β€” conducting hawk watches, migration surveys, and helping summer campers keep their weekly bird lists.

That early confidence carried him to Cornell University, where he worked with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology on projects like All About Birds, Merlin, and eBird, studied White-shouldered Fairywrens in Papua New Guinea, guided in Arizona's Chiricahua Mountains, and β€” bringing things full circle β€” won the World Series of Birding as a member of the Cornell Redheads. πŸ†

After realizing his true passion was education, Ben returned home to spend 10 years as a Naturalist at the Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park, leading bird walks, running summer camps, and giving lectures. He's since traveled to every continent and swum in every ocean β€” but always finds his way back to Somerset County.

Becoming Program Director at Scherman Hoffman, the very place that turned him into a birder, is a dream come true for Ben. He hopes to offer others the same warmth and encouragement he once received here, and his goal is simple: build a welcoming community of people who love nature and want to share that joy.

Stop by and say hello to Ben β€” he's always up for a conversation about birds, SCUBA diving, moth diversity, world travel, or whatever's on your mind that day! 🐦🌎
