Engine 29 and Rescue 29 assisted Muhlenberg Township Fire & Rescue 66 in a working fire this afternoon. Crews assisted with ventilation and overhaul before being released by command.

Squad 34-55 is currently on standby at Berks Station 29 while units operate at a working fire.

Tanker and Engine 29 responded Automatic Aid to Penn Twp yesterday for a smoke condition inside Plum Creek. Crews were able to locate the source and isolate the incident to minimize damage.

Plum Creek will be closed the remainder of July 4th due to the fire situation.

UPDATE: Everyone is ok, and it’s a small electrical fire that is getting under control.

Utility and Tanker 29 assisted Muhlenberg Township Fire & Rescue 66 with EMS operations and supplying water to cool down the crowd.

This week for Tuesday night training, our good friends from Newmanstown Volunteer Fire Company came over to learn how our water tank operates. This also allowed members from both departments to hone up on their pump skills, review each other’s apparatus and discuss other water supply options around the western side of the area.

This water tank was installed back in the 1970s as a secondary water supply to Bernville for fire suppression by the Army Corps of Engineers and is still maintained by them today. The tank holds approximately 105,000 gallons of water and is refilled by a 500gpm electric pump that draws from the Northkill Creek. This tank is our “go to” year round for much of the area where another water source isn’t an option.

Although you may think “That’s ridiculous for a department from so far away to know how to use this” or “it’s a water tank, how hard could it be?”. Due to limited staffing in the volunteer world, Newmanstown is dispatched either on the initial, or 2nd alarm structure fire assignments in the western half of our coverage area. This water tank is controlled by a series of valves that have an order in which they get opened and closed, along with a control for the pump.
