PRESS RELEASE: Tularemia Detected in Larimer County: Residents and Visitors Reminded to Take Simple Steps to Stay Safe Outdoors

The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment (LCDHE) is reporting that tularemia has been detected in Larimer County. The bacteria was identified in a dead rabbit found in a southwest Berthoud neighborhood. Because tularemia is endemic in Larimer County, it is likely present in other areas throughout the county as well. Health officials are reminding residents and visitors that a few simple precautions can help prevent illness from rabbits, ticks, and other wildlife while enjoying the outdoors this summer.

Tularemia is a rare but potentially serious bacterial infection found in local wildlife, especially rabbits and rodents. It can spread to humans through bites from infected ticks and deer flies, direct contact with sick or dead animals, or exposure to contaminated soil, water, or vegetation.
