Officers are currently on the US Hwy. 90 bridge westbound near the Berwick Exit for a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle. The right lane nearing the exit is closed at this time. Please expect delays and use caution while traveling the area.

🐊🚓 𝐏𝐔𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐂 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐒𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘🚓🐊

Yesterday evening, officers with the Berwick Police Department were dispatched to the area of Old Spanish Trail in reference to a “𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐦𝐩 𝐩𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐲” 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭’𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐚𝐫𝐝.

Upon arrival, officers located the suspect and were able to apprehend the little fella without incident. After determining he was not under the influence and did not have any outstanding warrants, officers attempted to find a safe area for relocation.

During transport, the tiny reptilian offender requested to test drive a patrol unit. Against our better judgment we allowed it. Thankfully, he only reached speeds of 2 MPH and did not activate the emergency lights.

The suspect was later relocated safely back to his natural habitat and released pending further “gator behavior” investigations. No officers, citizens, or swamp puppies were harmed during this incident.

For those wondering what police officers deal with on a daily basis… yes, it’s pretty much anything and everything. One minute it’s paperwork, the next minute it’s Grand Theft Gator. 🐊😂

𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐉.𝐏. 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐲 would like to recognize Officer Kenan Jones on being selected to the 𝐒𝐭. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟’𝐬 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 (𝐈𝐒𝐑𝐓).

Officer Jones is very early in his law enforcement career however, he has already shown the initiative and desire to learn this profession and continually better himself through training and dedication. When Officer Jones approached me about trying out for the Special Response Team, I was a little hesitant at first due to his short time on the job.

However, being a newer officer with no bad habits and a willingness to learn made him the perfect candidate to be given the opportunity to try out.

We would like to congratulate Officer Jones on successfully completing all qualifications and requirements necessary to be selected for the team. We are proud of his accomplishment and look forward to watching him continue to grow in his law enforcement career. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬!

Update-03:00 AM all lanes open
𝗛𝗪𝗬 𝟵𝟬 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗚𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗨𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡
Local agencies are advising the public that the Hwy 90 Bridge over the Atchafalaya River is currently shut down, both eastbound and westbound lanes.
The bridge was struck by a barge during the storm, therefore it will be shut down until DOTD can come out and inspect.
Motorists should expect travel delays.
We will update as soon as we have information.

Yes… we know.
The La. Hwy 182 bridge is under construction.

And apparently some people have mistaken the construction zone for:
❌ A walking trail
❌ A sightseeing attraction
❌ A shortcut
❌ A gym membership
❌ A “Let me see if I can help fix this thing” opportunity

𝐒𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞:

👉 If it has orange barrels, construction signs, heavy equipment, workers, and looks like a bridge being rebuilt. "𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐘 𝐎𝐅𝐅 𝐎𝐅 𝐈𝐓."

That includes:

Walking on the bridge
Crossing the bridge
Hanging out on the bridge
Touching construction equipment
Inspecting the work like you’re on an episode of HGTV
Trying to “help speed things up”

We promise the construction crews have it handled. 😅

If you are caught in the construction area, you are Trespassing and you can be cited or arrested depending on the circumstances. And if you are caught tampering with any of the equipment, you will be 𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐃.

We know everyone is ready for the bridge to be completed. Trust us, we are too. But the fastest way to delay a project is making workers stop because someone decided to take a field trip onto an active construction site.

ＦＯＲＩＭＭＥＤＩＡＴＥＲＥＬＥＡＳＥ:

𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐉.𝐏. 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐲 of the Berwick Police Department announces that the department will be participating in the statewide “𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐈𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭” 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟗 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟏, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔.

During this campaign, officers will conduct additional patrols focused on seat belt enforcement in an effort to improve roadway safety and reduce injuries and fatalities caused by motor vehicle crashes.

Each year, law enforcement officers across the country witness firsthand how seat belts save lives. While some may question the importance of enforcing seat belt laws, the reality is simple, wearing a seat belt significantly increases your chances of surviving a crash.

𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐉.𝐏. 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 would like to take a moment to honor the brave law enforcement officers across this state and our nation who go out each day to protect complete strangers.

These men and women often sacrifice precious time with their own families while serving communities that depend on them during some of life’s most difficult moments. Many continue to serve faithfully, even while facing danger from those who wish to harm them.

During this week, we ask everyone to take a moment to pray for the families who will be placing their loved one’s name on the 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐰 𝐄𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐥 in our nation’s capital. These officers gave their lives in the line of duty while selflessly serving others.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
