Last night, Mayor Lovero announced an executive order directing the immediate shutdown of Berwyn’s Flock Safety cameras. I appreciate the Mayor taking this action and the Berwyn Police Department’s commitment to finding other approaches to support public safety while responding to the concerns residents have raised about privacy, security, and trust.
I first brought this issue before City Council last year because I believed the documented concerns surrounding Flock deserved serious attention and that Berwyn needed to do the right thing by deactivating the cameras and terminating its contract with Flock. That did not happen. Instead, I brought the issue back to Council a second time, and while more restrictions were ultimately placed on the technology, the larger concerns remained. Over the past year, I continued working with residents, the Secretary of State’s office, journalists, and advocates in other communities who were confronting similar questions about Flock. It took sustained pressure, difficult conversations, and repeated efforts to keep this issue in front of our city before we finally reached a point where these concerns could no longer be dismissed. I would have preferred to see decisive action much sooner, but I am glad that action has now been taken.
I appreciate every resident who attended meetings, wrote to elected officials, asked questions, and kept this conversation moving. Community members made clear that public safety and public trust must go hand in hand. We would not have reached this point without the persistence of community members who kept showing up and refused to let these concerns be dismissed.
