Palestine Fest was a beautiful day, despite those who came to spread hate. Our community is resilient and our strength will not waver.

It is absurd to think that white supremacists from out of town could walk into our community and claim to be 'protesting' our presence in our own homes. This was an act of intimidation, a deliberate attempt to instill fear and hate on a day of celebration and commemoration. Lang and his gang did not leave without doing harm. A local teenager was sent to the hospital after being assaulted. That is a serious offense that must be investigated as the hate crime that it is, and those responsible must be held accountable.

Heavy rain is expected in the Chicagoland area. Reduce your use of water before, during and after the storm to help prevent flooding and protect water quality:

•Delay showers and baths
•Flush less frequently
•Wait to run the dishwasher or washing machine

Flooding and sewer backups can happen for a variety of reasons, ranging from conveyance of water flow in local pipes, the groundwater table, undersized drainage designs and roof loads, and sump pumps attached to house lines. To help prevent flooding inside or around your home, there are actions you and your family can take before and during rainfall.

The Illinois Court-Based Rental Assistance Program (CBRAP) is now open.

If you're a tenant or landlord dealing with an eviction case in Illinois over unpaid rent, this program could help. Eligible applicants may qualify for up to $10,000 toward past-due rent, up to $700 for court costs, and up to two months of future rent to help prevent displacement.

You may be eligible if:
• You're in a court eviction proceeding due to nonpayment
• Proof of citizenship isn't required
• You rent or lease an apartment in Illinois
• Your household income is at or below 80% of the area median income

I joined Teamsters Local 705 and 12th Ward Alderwoman Julia Ramirez and other elected leaders to back the Delivery Protection Act in support of delivery workers.

Amazon made $77 billion in profit last year. That doesn't sound like a poor company to me. Yet it tells its drivers they don't work for Amazon, and it fights them when they ask for fair wages, safer conditions, and the right to organize. UPS hires its drivers. The Postal Service hires its drivers. Amazon can afford to do the same.

The drivers make this company run. They deserve dignity, respect, and fairness. Pass the Delivery Protection Act!
