Cruise Nites are back!

Berwyn Cruise Nites kick off tonight in the Depot District, and they’ll continue to happen every first and third Monday, from 6-9pm through August.

So if you like classic cars and custom builds, local restaurants, and plenty of neighborhood summer energy, come check it out. The event takes place on Windsor Avenue between Home Avenue and Oak Park Avenue. It’s free, family-friendly, and a great excuse to spend a Monday night in the Depot. Hope to see you there!

Want to help keep stormwater out of you and your neighbor's basements? One of the simplest things homeowners can do is disconnect their downspouts from the sewer.

When heavy rain hits, water from our roofs can pour straight into the sewer system if your gutter directly connects. One house may not sound like much, but across a whole block, that water adds up fast. That can mean sewer backups, flooded basements, and more stress on our already overloaded infrastructure.

The good news is that Berwyn has a Residential Downspout Disconnection Assistance Program that can help homeowners with the cost! All you have to do is apply for the program, the Engineering Department will determine if you qualify, and then once you're approved. you can reroute your gutters and you'll get reimbursed for it!

For a basic downspout disconnection, the City may reimburse up to $25 per disconnected downspout, whether you are using elbows, splash pads, extensions, or a rain barrel with a connection kit. If your home needs a more complicated gutter rerouting, the reimbursement can be up to $300 per household. Homeowners who are 65 or older or disabled may also qualify for up to $100 in labor reimbursement for a simple disconnection, as long as it is approved ahead of time.

I’ll put the City’s program guidelines, application form, and contact information in the comments below. This isn't the only solution to flooding, but it's relatively simple and can make a real difference.

I’m posting this WAY later than I’d like because of the holiday weekend, but here is the latest plain-language agenda for tonight's City Council meeting.

On the docket is a proposed agreement to provide a social worker to the Police Department for mental health and crisis support, some lead service line replacement payments, upgrades to how residents may pay utility bills online, and a whole lot more.

Feel free to take a look to quickly know what’s being discussed and how it could affect you. Meeting is tonight at 8pm! You can find the link to the plain-language agenda in the comments below!

Cars flying down your block? Drivers rolling through stop signs? Trouble crossing at an intersection that just doesn’t feel safe? I want to hear about it.

I’ve put together a new First Ward Traffic Safety Concern Form to help track traffic safety issues around the ward in one place. I hear from residents pretty often about speeding, unsafe crossings, cut-through traffic, near misses, rolling stop signs, and other problems, but it helps to have that information organized so we can look for patterns.

If multiple people are reporting the same issue in the same area, that gives me something more concrete to bring to the Traffic Engineer, Police Department, Public Works, or other city staff when we talk about possible fixes.

You can use the form for a one-time incident or an ongoing issue. You can also submit it more than once if something keeps happening or if you have concerns about more than one location.

Just to be clear, this form is not for emergencies or anything that needs an immediate response. If something urgent is happening, please call 911 or the appropriate city department.

You can fill out the form using the link in the comments!

Hey y’all! Quick pool-related update, since I've seen a few questions popping up recently.

First, the Pool Committee meeting scheduled for tonight has been canceled due to a scheduling conflict. We’ll reschedule it for another date and cover the same agenda. As always, everyone is welcome to attend! We will also try to make sure it's livestreamed.

Second, I want to clear up a little confusion about what the Pool Committee does and does not do. The committee does not have any control over pool operations or whether the pool opens or closes this summer. It is an advisory committee focused on looking at possible future options for a pool replacement, including its design and cost. Once the committee finishes its work, any recommendation would still need to go to City Council and, most likely, the voters before anything moves forward. Even if a plan is eventually approved, this would be a multi-year process. The City would still need to go through an RFP process, select a contractor, obtain permits and approvals from the Illinois Department of Public Health, and then move into construction. Based on what other communities have experienced, that process could take a couple of years before any construction begins.

So, the main takeaway is this: there are no immediate pool closures coming because of new construction. The pool is expected to operate as normal this year. Based on what I’ve been told, the pool is scheduled to open on June 1st, as long as there are no unexpected issues!

Want to keep up with what’s happening in Berwyn? My First Ward newsletter archive is now public!

The newsletter is still designed first and foremost for First Ward residents. That means if you live in the First Ward and haven’t signed up yet, I’d love for you to subscribe so you can get updates directly and share feedback when I ask for input.

But I also know there are plenty of folks outside the ward who care about what’s happening locally. Going forward, I’ll be publishing public versions of the newsletter online so anyone can read past updates, follow local issues, and stay connected. The public versions may be edited to remove polls or direct feedback requests meant specifically for First Ward residents, since I want to make sure those responses come from the constituents I represent.

But if you’re trying to stay informed about our city, you can check out recent newsletters at the link in the comments!

IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT THE 34TH STREET PROJECT:

Construction is expected to begin tomorrow, Wednesday, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen issues. My understanding is that the project will be completed in phases so the entire stretch is not under construction at the same time. The first section scheduled for work is from Harlem Avenue to Home Avenue.

Residents should expect road closures while construction is actively happening between 7am and 5pm. I have been told that the road will reopen when construction is not occurring, and people should be able to drive through that area outside of active work hours.

I know this will be disruptive, especially for folks who live nearby or regularly travel through 34th Street. At the same time, this is a major project, and I’m looking forward to seeing the improvements once the work is complete.

Please plan ahead and be careful around the construction area. And if you run into any issues while construction is happening, please reach out to me at [email protected]

What’s happening with the old Berwyn State Bank building? What’s the plan for Roosevelt Road? What should residents know before vehicle sticker season starts?

Those are all on this week’s City Council agenda.

I put together a plain-language version so you don’t have to dig through the full packet to understand what’s being discussed and voted on. This week’s agenda includes major redevelopment conversations, updates that could shape Roosevelt Road, new vehicle sticker information, public safety appointments, and a whole lot more.
