A little history about part of our great community!

It has been a busy week for Concord and our surrounding communities. On Tuesday our personnel responded with Birmingport Fire District and Warrior River Fire District to the 8400 Block of Taylors Ferry Road on a structure fire. Upon our arrival we encountered heavy smoke showing and working fire conditions. Crews performed searches inside the structure due to not knowing if anyone was home and in the structure. Thankfully all the residents were not home at the time of the fire but we were able to rescue the family’s cat and dog from the fire and they are alive and well. The fire was extinguished and crews returned to service. We are proud of our automatic aid agreements with Birmingport and Warrior River Fire, due to working together, we had 18 firefighters on scene and 12,500 gallons of water. Teamwork is the key to success.

Today Birmingport crews responded to the report of an adult male in cardiac arrest. Upon our arrival the patient was in cardiac arrest. On scene crews were able to restore breathing and a pulse, and the patient was talking to crew members before transport. Great Job A Shift!!!! Our prayers go out to these families.

We are very proud of our guys and gals at Concord along with our neighboring departments Birmingport and Warrior River.

I don’t know if it’s going to be called a “derecho,” but it was a golly-whopper of a line of storms.

The current AMS/SPC definition requires:

1. A swath of wind damage and/or gusts ≥ 58 mph extending at least 400 miles
2. Damage/gusts must be quasi-continuous along the swath
3. The major axis of the damage swath must be at least twice as long as the widest part

What this event shows:

159 damage reports. 43 counties. A wind swath stretching from the Tennessee Valley all the way through central and southeast Alabama and into Georgia — around 400 miles or more of near-continuous damage.

The numbers tell the story: trees into houses in Brighton, Bessemer, Dadeville, and Talladega. A tree through a home in Titus. Nine RVs totaled and two people injured at Little Mountain Marina near Grant. Wind gusts to 56 mph at Anniston Regional, 53 mph at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth, and unofficial gusts of 61 mph near Muscle Shoals and 54 mph in downtown Decatur.

A derecho requires a damage swath of at least 400 miles with wind gusts reaching 58 mph at multiple points. Based on the SPC storm report map, Monday’s storms come very close to both thresholds. Final classification requires a full SPC review, but the evidence is there.

The honest assessment will also have to include the soft, soggy ground and determine whether so much damage occurred because of the ground conditions or if it truly was a derecho wind event.

6/1/26 4:00 pm over 127k power outages reported, most in Jefferson County. Please be patient with the line workers as well.

3:20 pm we have additional reports of downed trees on McClain Rd and the 7700-7800 block of Lock 17 Rd near Riverbirch. Be patient with Deputies working the roadways as well.

🚨Call 911 to report downed trees on roadways.

With the current storm moving in we already have a report of tree(s) down near Taylor’s Ferry Rd & Brandon Rd.

We may see this occur more in our area today, please be patient with Fire Crews who will work to clear any road debris. And use extreme caution if you must be out on the roads.

Weather professionals are indicating they do NOT see the potential for tornadoes. Just the possibility of downed trees and power outages.

Today we would like to congratulate Ryan Ross on his completion of the 160 to Firefighter I/II Bridge Program. Conducted by Springville Fire Department and Alabama Fire College, this is a demanding course which allows certified 160 firefighters to complete the Bridge Portion of the program to become Certified Professional Firefighters. Along with the many hats he wears in life, Ryan now carries the accomplished titles of Firefighter I/II and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT). Thank you Ryan, your hard work has paid off!

Our entire area is in a severe risk this afternoon and evening… I’m highlighting an area where there is a higher tornado risk to the south of Tuscaloosa.

Severe weather parameters will be quite elevated in the area circled in red. This is where there is a higher chance of a long track tornado.

Everyone across west Alabama need to have a plan and be ready to take action if a tornado warning is issued for your area.

The severe risk could begin as early as 2pm across west Alabama, ending by midnight.

⚠️ FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: Here’s the timing we’re watching closest for today ⬇️

We’re watching radar to the north this morning for a chance of a few showers and storms to sneak into far northern areas, but the greater concern for severe weather arrives later today. It will also be windy at times with south to southwest wind gusts over 20 mph.

Addressing the tornado risk: I included the latest tornado parameters from HRRR guidance, which suggest we need to be weather alert by early afternoon starting northwest.

⏰ CURRENT TIMING ESTIMATE:
➡️ 2 PM: Storms developing west/northwest
➡️ 6 PM: Risk increasing across Central Alabama
➡️ 10 PM: Tornado threat gradually shifting south overnight, though stronger storms and localized flooding could linger through midnight.

This is not expected to be a major outbreak-type setup, and remember this is guidance, not a guarantee, but it does show we need to stay weather alert this afternoon and evening. As I always say, it only takes one storm.

There is still a good chance storms quickly grow into a larger area of rain and thunderstorms tonight, but the wind, hail, and localized flooding threat would continue until the heaviest activity shifts south.

The good news is the threat should gradually settle down later tonight with much calmer weather tomorrow.

Bottom line:
Keep an eye on the weather this afternoon and make sure you’re ready to act if warnings are issued. Every severe weather event is unique, and the outcome depends heavily on how conditions evolve during the day. Hopefully this turns into mainly rain and thunder for many of us, but we’ll be here tracking it every step of the way.

Our storm shelters will be open tomorrow if/when a tornado watch is issued by Jefferson County EMA. Be prepared and be safe.
