Hunger is not a distant issue. It is happening right here in central Alabama, affecting children, working families, seniors, and neighbors in every part of our community. Last year, through the support of our community, the Community Food Bank distributed 19,699,013 meals through our network of over 300 distribution partners.

Happy Hunger Action Month, a month of raising awareness and taking action to support your neighbors facing hunger. In central Alabama, 1 in 6 of our neighbors and 1 in 4 children face hunger.

In August, 947 volunteers contributed 1,758 hours to furthering our mission to end hunger in central Alabama. We received 1,669,814 pounds of food and distributed 906,722 pounds, providing 755,601 meals to our neighbors facing hunger.

We’re turning orange for Hunger Action Month.

Throughout September, we’re raising awareness for the children, families, seniors, and neighbors facing hunger right here in central Alabama. Across our service area, 16.9% of our neighbors face hunger, including 23.1% of children.

These numbers represent real people in our community — neighbors making impossible choices between food and other basic needs like housing, utilities, medicine, and transportation.

This Hunger Action Month, you can take action by using your voice, showing up for your neighbors, and helping spread awareness about hunger in central Alabama.

This summer, we partnered with Cleburne County-Alabama Extension to help ensure children and families had access to food while school was out.

Through our Sunny Bites program, the Cleburne County site distributed more than 16,500 meals to neighbors throughout the summer.

Sunny Bites helps fill the gap when school meals are unavailable, providing food and support to children and their families during the summer months. This year, we expanded the program to 11 of the 12 counties we serve, helping us reach even more neighbors across central Alabama.

We’re grateful to the Cleburne County Extension Office for partnering with us to make this work possible and for helping us bring more meals to families in their community.

September is Hunger Action Month, and there are so many ways to take action with us!

All month long, you can help raise awareness and support neighbors facing hunger across central Alabama by starting a food or fund drive, volunteering, wearing orange, attending community events, supporting local give-back nights, becoming a Meal Maker, shopping CFB merch, or using your voice to advocate for hunger relief programs.
