The United States Supreme Court has once again turned its back on Black voters in Alabama. By allowing lawmakers to dismantle a congressional district that gave Black communities a real opportunity to elect candidates of their choice, this decision is a direct attack on voting rights, representation, and decades of hard-fought progress.

Alabama’s Black population deserves fair representation — not maps designed to silence our voices and weaken our political power. Courts previously found these districts discriminated against Black voters, yet today we are watching history repeat itself under a different name.

This ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court is a serious setback, and here in Alabama, we cannot afford to ignore what’s at stake.

Our state carries a long and painful history when it comes to voting rights—and we know all too well what happens when access to the ballot is weakened. This moment demands urgency, vigilance, and action.

As your City Councilman in Bessemer, I am calling on state and local leaders to be clear, transparent, and accountable about how this decision will impact our communities. We must not allow barriers—intentional or not—to silence the voices of our people.

Let me be direct: any step backward on voting rights in Alabama is unacceptable. We must stand together to protect access, expand participation, and ensure every eligible voter can be heard.

Pay attention. Speak up. Organize. And vote like our future depends on it—because it does.

“The power of the vote is the power to shape our future—and we will not surrender it.”
