Hello everyone - Sawyer Forbes here. Two of the participants of the grafting class showed me their trees, and I just want to make a quick update for folks who need a reminder on the next steps!

If your graft was successful and your scion wood has leaves, leave the grafting tape on, and plant the tree as soon as you have time. When planting, make sure to pick a location with enough room for an adult semi-dwarf tree, and dig your hole large enough for the entire rootstock. This week is supposed to stay hot, so water your newly planted trees once every day or every two days. After 2 weeks, water your tree 3 times a week when there is not much precipitation. If your rootstock has leaves, but your scion does not, that's okay! Some grafts may not be successful. You can still plant the rootstock, and then next year, try a new graft!

If you have questions, feel free to contact me: [email protected]

Happy Forester Friday - Sawyer Forbes here. Last week, we wrapped up the planting portion of our Deer Habitat Improvement Partnership Initiative (DHIPI) grant! The Conservation District and County Forestry and Parks team planted 6,500 mixed conifer and oak trees. The trees were planted in three windthrown areas on the County Forest within the Devils Creek-Chaney Lake Deer Wintering Complex.

Deer Wintering Complexes provide a variety of food and cover resources utilized by deer during the winter. They are listed as Forests of Recognized Importance (FORI) in the Upper Peninsula and are crucial habitat not just for deer, but for many of our wildlife species. These plantings will hopefully speed up the regeneration of the forest and provide a significant benefit to the wildlife that utilize these areas and the surrounding ecosystem.

Workshop may be videotaped for later posting on social media, in which case you will need to sign a waiver

Cost $10 per person payable to: Gogebic Conservation District, 500 N. Moore St., Bessemer, MI 49911. Please enclose your payment along with registration to secure your spot. 🌱🌱 Volunteer tree planting opportunity starting next week! 🌱🌱

🦌🦌This year, GCD was awarded grant funds through the Michigan DNR’s Deer Habitat Improvement Partnership Initiative (DHIPI) to improve deer habitat in the Devils Creek - Chaney Lake Deer Wintering Complex. With some of these funds, we are planting 6,500 trees in recent blowdowns which previously acted as important winter yarding habitat. We have already planted 1,800 cedars in these gaps, but we still have a lot of trees to go! Volunteers can join us starting next week to help plant these trees for wildlife habitat. We will provide tools, trees, and instructions! If you are interested or want to learn more about this great opportunity to get outdoors and be involved in habitat restoration, please contact [email protected] or at 906-285-1497. Thank you!

We will meet this Saturday, May 9th, at 1PM at the Miners Park Trail Entrance on Ayers St. by the Baseball Field.

We will focus on removing the Buckthorn in the vicinity of the trail entrance.
Some of the Buckthorn will be flagged ahead of time so that you can get used to identifying it.
Buckthorn has stiff long thorns so gloves are highly recommended.
Dress for the weather, bugs (ticks), and walking thru brush.
Some hand tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own.
Water and snacks will be provided.
Volunteers will need to sign a liability waiver and volunteer agreement.
A short training session will be provided.
Work at a comfortable pace, no need to overexert oneself, we hope to make this a monthly activity on the second Saturday of the month, from May to October each year to Improve the health and biodiversity of the Park.

Happy Arbor Day, everyone! Sawyer Forbes here. The very first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10th, 1872, in Nebraska, and it is estimated that over a million trees were planted that day. Arbor Day was officially named a federal holiday in 1970. Arbor Day is a day to celebrate trees, which you can do by getting involved in community projects involving trees (or our natural resources), by volunteering, participating in forest management, learning more about trees, or just by getting outside!

If you ordered trees/shrubs from the Conservation District, today would be a great day to think about where you might want to plant them! The pick-up days are May 9, 10, and 11, with all the details on our website.

Happy celebrating!
