Construction on the Bethany Christian Church (Houston) Memorial Library, the new wing of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society’s facilities in Bethany, is progressing nicely. This new addition will provide dedicated space for the most expansive collection of early Stone-Campbell materials, archival storage, museum and exhibit space, staff offices, and a digitization lab to support the Society’s growing work of preservation and access.

We are hopeful that the initial stage of construction will be completed by the beginning of July. The staff offices and digitization lab are expected to be fully finished at that time, allowing our team to begin using portions of the new space this summer. The second stage of the project, which will include outfitting the archival storage areas and museum space, is expected to begin later in the summer.

Visitors to the Historical Society will be able to see the new space this summer, even as work continues. The museum exhibit will not be installed until later in 2026, but each step brings us closer to a facility designed to preserve and share the earliest decades of Disciples history for years to come.

Eizo Sakamoto was a Disciples minister who served displaced Japanese and Japanese Americans in Colorado after World War II. Shortly after his ordination, the United Christian Missionary Society (UCMS) sent Sakamoto to Rocky Ford, Colorado, to help Japanese and Japanese Americans in the Arkansas River Valley integrate into local churches. As a minister at the Rocky Ford Christian Church, Sakamoto conducted Japanese language worship services in Rocky Ford, Crowley, and Las Animas; he also worked with Japanese speakers in the San Luis Valley. DCHS staff recently contributed to a national conversation among archivists about how institutions can navigate deliberate pauses in collecting. Colleen McFarland Rademaker and Erin Anderson discussed the Historical Society’s 2025 congregational collecting pause, explaining how it created space to reassess collecting practices, communicate with stakeholders, and develop a more focused and sustainable collection development policy. In the first installment of our new “Digitization 101” series, the Historical Society’s archival team answers one of the most common questions we receive: when will the collections be digitized? This introductory article explains the basics of digitization, including how it supports access and preservation and why digital stewardship requires careful planning, resources, and ongoing care. The Cane Ridge Revival and the Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery emerged during a time when old structures of church and society were giving way to something new. In this installment of the Historian’s Corner, Joel Brown explores what those formative moments in Stone-Campbell history might offer Disciples today as the world of congregations, denominations, seminaries, and voluntary associations changes around us.
