South Hills Interfaith Movement - SHIM Together, with teams of dedicated volunteers, donors and partners, we’re working to reduce the devastating effects of suburban poverty in the South Hills.

Born nearly fifty years ago as South Hills Interfaith Ministries by, no kidding, a priest, a rabbi and a minister, SHIM has been providing food, clothing and services to people in need in Pittsburgh’s southern suburban neighborhoods ever since. Faced with unprecedented new levels of suburban poverty, SHIM is expanding its work to include more neighbors helping more neighbors in need. Together, wit

h teams of dedicated volunteers, donors and partners, we’re working to reduce the devastating effects of suburban poverty among the working poor, unemployed, families, single parents, senior citizens, women, and the high concentration of refugee families in our service area.

📞 A simple phone call can make a meaningful difference.

SHIM's CheckMates program connects caring volunteers with local seniors for a weekly, confidential phone call.

It's friendly. It's reassuring. And it's a helpful check-in that helps seniors stay connected and know someone cares.

If you know a senior who could use a weekly call, please connect them to CheckMates!

Thank you to First Commonwealth Bank for their continued support of SHIM's preschool program through Pennsylvania's Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program!

Their investment helps provide high-quality early childhood education opportunities for young learners in our community, creating a stronger foundation for future success.

What makes the EITC Program so powerful is that it's a win-win: businesses can redirect a portion of their state tax dollars to support local educational programs like SHIM's preschool instead of sending those funds to Harrisburg. The result? Tax dollars stay in our community and make a direct impact on local children and families. 👶👧🧒

If you're a business owner or decision-maker looking for a meaningful way to support local education while receiving significant state tax credits, we'd love to talk with you about how the EITC Program works and how your business can get involved.

📈 The need in our community continues to grow.

In our latest blog, Executive Director Jim shares what SHIM is seeing firsthand: more families struggling to make ends meet, more children facing food insecurity, and a greater need for neighbors helping neighbors.

As school lets out for the summer, many children lose access to the meals they depend on during the school year. That's why our Summer Hunger Campaign is so important.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Edgar Snyder & Associates, gifts will be matched through June 30, helping to provide nutritious food to local kids all summer long.

🍎 It costs just $3 to provide one lunch
🍎A gift of $75 turns into $150
🍎 $150 feeds 50 children

Together, we can make sure no child goes hungry this summer.

A huge thank you to GH for stepping up in such a meaningful way for our neighbors in need! 🐾❤️

Not only did their team donate $800 worth of pet food, but they also rolled up their sleeves and spent time packing it for distribution through our food pantry.

Pet food is one of our most-needed items, and unlike many of the groceries we can purchase through the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, pet food must be purchased at full retail cost. That makes gifts like this especially impactful.

We're incredibly grateful for GH's double investment—both their financial support and their time and energy. Thanks to their generosity, more families will be able to keep their beloved pets fed and cared for during difficult times.

Thank you, GH, for helping us care for every member of the family, including the four-legged ones! 🐕🐈

A new Brookings report found that nearly half of U.S. households don't earn enough to cover basic needs—even with people working hard and inflation cooling.

As one researcher noted, many families are living "on the financial edge," where even a small increase in expenses can create real hardship.

At SHIM, we see this reality firsthand. The families who come to us are working hard, yet many are still struggling to afford food, housing, child care, and other basic needs. That's why access to essential services and community support remains so important.

☀️ Summer should be a time for kids to play, learn, and grow- not worry about where their next meal will come from. With schools closed, many children lose access to the breakfasts and lunches they count on each day, making community support more important than ever. We’ve seen a 10% increase in pantry participation just in the last few months!
