On the afternoon of Monday, August 31 Bethel Township Police were alerted to an address on Bennett Street where a male was reported to be having a mental health crisis and had possibly committed a criminal act as well. Out of an abundance of caution, Bethel Township Police requested assistance from the Berks County Emergency Response Team (BCERT). Officers who initially responded prior to BCERT’s arrival on scene ensured that the male remained contained to the residence and posed no threat to the public.
The involved male was taken into custody without incident shortly after 6:00PM. Bethel Township Police were assisted by Bethel Community Ambulance, Bethel Fire Company, Frystown Fire Company, Mount Aetna Fire Company, Tulpehocken Township Police, Womelsdorf Police, Pennsylvania State Police as well as multiple members of BCERT.
During this incident roads in the vicinity were shut down, and the school district was alerted to those closures. We appreciate the patience of the community as we worked to a safe conclusion to this incident. All roadways are back open. The investigation remains open and actively ongoing.
