Bethel Fire & EMS

Bethel Fire & EMS We are the proud men and women of the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department, providing fire, rescue, and EMS services to the town of Bethel, CT since 1831!

Located near historic downtown Bethel on South Street, we are one of two volunteer fire departments providing emergency services throughout town. Along with responding alongside Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Department (Bethel's other fire company), we provide mutual aid services to surrounding towns of Western Connecticut. We are always looking for new members to join our team! Contact us today to learn how you can become a vital member of our community!

Did you know that Connecticut is more wildland urban interface and intermix than California, Colorado, Idaho, Tennessee, and Montana combined?

But what does that mean? And why should we care?

This short documentary, Safety InSight - Episode 2, by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation explores the dangers of the Wildland Urban Interface along with research being conducted to present another disaster like the Palisades fire of 2025... yes, it could happen here in Connecticut (and research suggests we're overdue).

Also, this documentary was produced and directed by one of our own members (as a volunteer department, our members cover a wide spectrum of careers, including filmmakers)

Normally after a major incident we post some information to keep the town informed. But today, honestly we’re still recovering from an absolutely remarkable stretch of Fire and EMS calls that unleashed within two hours time. Truly, if you were on social media asking “what’s with all of the sirens?” we’re just gonna say help was needed across town and a lot of firefighters, police officers, and EMTs were working hard to deliver that aid where needed.

After two motor vehicles accidents to start the afternoon, there was a structure fire downtown, multiple fire alarm activations in Clarke Park, a brush fire in Stony Hill, another outside fire downtown, and as we write this, another fire alarm activation in Stony Hill. Those sirens you heard were from the Bethel Fire Department, Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company , Brookfield Volunteer Fire Company , Redding Fire & EMS Company #1 , Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company #1 , Dodgingtown Volunteer Fire Company, No. 1. Inc. , Bethel Police Department , and Bethel Emergency Management & Fire Marshal. There were also some amazing neighbors helping neighbors until fire services arrived. Cheers to our Dispatchers who seemingly had the phone ringing off the hook and still got resources to where they needed to be.

Inquiries on the fire downtown can be directed to the Fire Marshal’s office. Strong work by all and a big thanks to our mutual aid partners.

As of this post, we believe there have been 17 calls for service across town since 12AM

Bethel High School EMT Students take home gold in 16th Annual BHS EMS Olympics

What are we talking about? Last week High School EMT students from Bethel High School, Danbury High School, Stratford EMS Explorers, Joel Barlow High School (Redding), and Seymour EMS Explorers competed in a series of skill and knowledge stations, ending with a jeopardy-style trivia game.

The big mass-casualty-incident scenario puts student competitors to the real test as they triage and treat multiple "patients" in a high stress situation.

In Connecticut, teenagers can be certified EMTs at the age of 16, serving their communities. In Bethel, we are fortunate to have a high school program where students work towards certification, often launching careers in EMS, nursing, medicine, and more (and many have gone on to become volunteer EMTs for the local fire department).

The event is sponsored by Holmberg Well Drilling, Smitty's Autobody, and the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department.

Bethel High School won the Academic Challenge

Individual Category Winners
1st Jack Geran
2nd Bintuo Kaba
3rd Val Pepi

We love hosting this event and congratulate all of the competitors in a great 2026 EMS Olympics!

We don't just drive ambulances.

We respond all hours of the day, in all weather, on every holiday, whenever that call for help arrives. We climb through crashed up cars, snowdrifts and heatwaves, woodland trails, condo complexes, industrial workspaces, and living room floors - wherever it is we need to get to you.

We restart hearts, splint broken bones, move air through your lungs, give life saving meds, pick you up off the floor, and keep watch over your vitals.

We walk in, no matter how sick you may be, because you called and someone has to help. We standby at your road races. We cheer on our football team from the end zones.

And we do it as a team - because the emergency medical SYSTEM is not just one person, but a coordinated effort between first responders, Paramedics, daytime staffers, and everyday volunteers. Yes, we volunteer - leaving our workplaces, homes, and soccer games, hot meals, and cool pillows to answer the call for help (nearly 1700 calls a year).

This week is EMS Week 2026, and we celebrate the remarkable team of EMRs, EMTs, Bethel Paramedics, and Vintech Management Service staffers who keep our two ambulances moving 24/7/365. And we salute all of our instructors, medical control directors, dispatchers, and mutual aid BLS and ALS partners who complete that team when needed.

This is EMS Week 2026, and we're proud to serve you Bethel.

Just remember... we aren't just ambulance drivers.

It's not all lights & sirens...
If you've passed by Bethel Fire Headquarters on South Street any time this week, you might've noticed a lot of "Cleaning Activity" going on.
Your Volunteers have been hard at work cleaning the apparatus and firehouse ahead of this coming Sunday's Annual Remembrance Service and Memorial Day Parade.
Firefighters and EMS Personnel will gather at HQ Sunday morning to remember those in our ranks who have passed on. We'll then line up in our Dress Blues and march through town in remembrance of all those service members who made the Ultimate Sacrifice.
The parade kicks off in town at 2:00 p.m. We'd appreciate your showing up and showing your support!
