On November 22, 2014, So Others Might Eat held its 28th Annual Gala to celebrate 44 years of serving the poor and homeless in Washington D.C. Held at The National Building Museum, the theme of the evening was “A Home for the Holidays.” This was exhibited through the beautiful setting of the room that resembled a Winter Wonderland, which included miniature bird houses displayed on individual tables for several lucky guests to take home. With over 800 people in attendance, guests were offered a heartfelt program led by Masters of Ceremonies Alison Starling & Peter Alexander, that significantly demonstrated the difference that SOME has made in the lives of thousands of men, women, and children.
Edward and Kathleen Quinn of T.W. Perry were this year’s recipients of the 2014 Fr. Horace McKenna Humanitarian of the Year Award for their lasting dedication to SOME.
This year’s Gala was a huge success as over $800,000 was raised to support this wonderful cause. The organization will be hosting their annual Turkey Trot for Hunger on Thanksgiving Day in another effort to help the homeless and hungry in D.C.

Thank you to everyone who attended and who continues to support this wonderful organization!

On Tuesday, September 16th, 2014, The Children's Inn at National Institutes of Health held the 26th Annual Congressional Gala at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in downtown Washington. Led by this year’s Mistress of Ceremonies, award winning American Legal Affairs Correspondent for National Public Radio, Nina Totenberg, the theme of this year’s Gala was “From Every State, For Every Child” and drew in hundreds of guests who all have significantly contributed to The Inn. Several Members of Congress were present at the event including Honorary Chairs Congressman Chris Van Hollen and Senator Roy Blunt who both gave heartfelt speeches highlighting the incredible achievements the Inn has made since they first open their doors in June of 1990. Special guest Ezmee Hutton, a patient at The Inn battling an immune system disorder entitled Common Variable Immune Deficiency delivered a heartfelt speech that made it very apparent to everyone in the audience what an extraordinary difference The Children’s Inn has made in her life, as it does for so many other children and families.

The program ended with a surprise award presentation for Kathy Russell, The Children’s Inn’s respected and dedicated Chief Executive Officer. With her decision to retire this year, her friends and colleagues at The Inn presented her with an award that demonstrated their gratitude for all she has done for the past ten years.

The evening’s theme “From Every State, For Every Child” also inspired a unique silent auction filled with baskets donated by several Congressman, Senators, and Governors from around the country. The silent auction was a wonderful success and several guests went home with beautiful baskets filled with unique items that represent each State that participated!
