: Despite the Rod of Asclepius being used as a symbol of medicine as far back as 1400 BC, the caduceus has been widely used as another symbol of medicine. The U.S. Army Medical Corps' adoption of the caduceus in 1902 sparked an increase in the use of the caduceus over the Rod of Asclepius. The Navy Hospital Corps originally used the red cross as its symbol until it changed to the caduceus in 1948.

: Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, draws its roots from Mary Ann Williams who wrote a letter to her local newspaper to set aside one day a year to decorate the graves of troops who fought in the Civil War. Today, Memorial Day honors all service members who have died serving their country. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

: Armed Forces Day has been celebrated on the third Saturday of May since its creation in 1950 by President Harry Truman. The holiday was first proposed by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson in 1949. The third Saturday of May was chosen because it did not interfere with any other holidays and the weather in mid-May made it suitable for public celebrations. The longest continuously running Armed Forces Day Parade is held in Bremerton, Washington. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿช–

As we wrap up Nurses Week 2026, we highlight one more of our nurses. Ms. Oluchi Eluma is a Nursing Supervisor who works in Naval Postgraduate Dental School (NPDS)'s Orofacial Pain Department. NPDS is a directorate of NMLPDC.

Ms. Eluma's inspiration for becoming a nurse is being passionate about serving and providing comfort to others. "I value the lifelong learning and dedication the field demands. Combining knowledge with empathy is what makes nursing meaningful to me."

This week we are celebrating our nurses who make a play an impactful role on the Navy Medicine team by providing quality and compassionate care to our Sailors, Marines, and their families. Happy Nurses Week! โš“
