(2)

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) strives to mentor individuals wishing to pursue careers in academic medicine in Rheumatology. Our program is comprised of tracks emphasizing either clinical or basic science research. Our integrated emphasis on discovery, spanning from the bench to bedside, exposes trainees to a true translational experience. While t

he program fulfills ACGME requirements for adult rheumatology in its first two years, fellows accepted into the program are fully funded for three years and are expected to commit to at least a three year duration of training along either the Physician Scientist or Clinical Investigator pathways.

Recently published paper from Dr. Sarthak Gupta, NIAMS Scholar in the Rheumatology Training Program, evaluates the role of autoantibodies in lupus and other systemic autoimmune diseases. Researchers found that lupus patients have an excess of autoantibodies against signaling proteins called interferons. These anti-interferon autoantibodies are a potential therapeutic target for lupus.
