In a preclinical study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a novel therapeutic called a sequestrant protected against m**hamphetamine overdose, for which there are currently no medications.

Sequestrants are vault-like molecules designed to trap harmful substances and clear them from the body. In this study, the sequestrant CS-1103 protected against the breakdown of heart, lung, and kidney functions that occur during m**h overdose.

Phase 2 clinical trials are already underway to test whether CS-1103 can prevent m**h and fentanyl toxicity in people.

Allergic and inflammatory conditions are on the rise, and researchers are working to better understand how everyday exposures to chemicals and pollutants may play a role.

By participating in this NIH research study, you could help advance our understanding of how environmental factors affect human health.

🔎 Who can participate?
Healthy adults ages 18–80.

🏥 What does participation involve?
• Two 7-day hospital stays spaced 4–6 weeks apart
• Participants remain in the room during each 7-day stay so researchers can carefully control environmental exposures
• Controlled environments with specific air quality, food, and personal care products
• Collection of blood, urine, skin, and other health samples
• Lung, skin, and sensory testing
• Follow-up outpatient visits after each stay

💰 You may be compensated up to $1,600 upon completion of the study.
Questions about what daily life is like during the study, bringing a phone or laptop, meals, or other study procedures? Our recruitment team is happy to help.

🦷 What if treating a child’s dental cavity didn’t require drilling, shots, or sedation?

NIH-funded researchers are studying a simple, noninvasive liquid called silver diamine fluoride, or SDF, which could be applied to existing cavities to prevent further tooth decay.

In a study of 830 young children, researchers found that 38% SDF was significantly more effective than a placebo at stopping existing cavities in primary teeth.

🎉 A new chapter for NIH research in Phoenix, AZ!

Last week, NIH’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) celebrated the opening of a new 35,000-square-foot clinical research unit in Phoenix, Arizona, dedicated to advancing research on diabetes and other diseases to benefit all Americans, and in particular local communities such as the Gila River Indian Community.

🔬 This is the only research facility in the world with four metabolic chambers, which give scientists the ability to better understand how the body uses energy.

The event was attended by NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, leadership from NIDDK and the Tribal Health Research Office, and NIH Office of Research Facilities staff.

The opening was made especially meaningful by the participation of Gila River Indian Community leaders, including Councilwoman Nada Celaya and Elder and Cultural Leader Robert Stone, who shared an opening blessing and song to mark the occasion.
