A dementia friendly community is built in the places our neighbors already know and trust.

The coffee shop. The bank. The church. The salon. The pharmacy. The local business where patience and understanding can make someone’s day a little easier.

That is what Community Partnership with Dementia Friendly Lehigh Valley is about.

Your partnership helps support education, outreach, resources, and advocacy for individuals living with dementia and their care partners throughout the Lehigh Valley.

It is more than a donation. It is a statement that your business or organization believes in dignity, awareness, and community support.

Talking to kids about Alzheimer’s or dementia can feel hard, but simple, honest conversations can help them feel less scared and more connected. 💜

Kids do not need every medical detail. They need reassurance, patience, and permission to ask questions.

Helpful things children can do:
- Look at photos together
- Sing a familiar song
- Draw a picture
- Hold hands
- Help set the table
- Say “I love you” even if the person cannot say it back

Dementia changes many things, but it does not erase love, family, or the value of being present.

At Dementia Friendly Lehigh Valley, we believe people of all ages can learn compassion, understanding, and kindness toward those living with dementia and their care partners.

Dementia Friendly Lehigh Valley is grateful to see community partners creating meaningful opportunities for the next generation of healthcare professionals.

On May 11, Country Meadows Senior Care of Allentown welcomed 52 local high school students from Lehigh Career & Technical Institute’s Emerging Healthcare Professional program for a hands-on learning experience focused on supporting people living with memory-related diseases, including dementia.

With guidance from Carol Ditman, CDP, CMDCP, CADDCT, Executive Director of Programming, Joel Kroft, Executive Director for Memory Support Services, and the Country Meadows team, students explored interactive dementia-related experiences including Tovertafel Pixie, Crdl, and Dementia LIVE!

The students used a “Passport to Learning” as they moved through each experience, reflected on what they learned, and asked thoughtful questions during the wrap-up discussion.

This is not an easy topic, but it is such an important one for students preparing to enter healthcare. We were encouraged to see these young people engage with compassion, curiosity, and kindness toward residents and those living with dementia.

These students truly represent the future of healthcare, and we are grateful to Country Meadows for helping build a more dementia-friendly community. 💙

Wandering can happen when a person living with dementia is looking for something familiar, trying to meet a need, or responding to stress, restlessness, boredom, or confusion.

Instead of thinking of it as “just walking away,” it can help to ask:
What might they be looking for? What might they need?

A few supportive steps for care partners:

-Keep daily routines as consistent as possible
-Offer safe, regular opportunities for movement
-Make sure basic needs are met: hunger, thirst, bathroom, pain, temperature, fatigue
-Use calm reassurance instead of arguing or correcting
-Consider door alarms, ID bracelets, updated photos, and trusted neighbors as part of a safety plan
-Call for help right away if someone is missing

Wandering is not “bad behavior.” It is communication. With understanding, planning, and community support, we can help people living with dementia stay safer while preserving dignity and independence.
