Once again, the Commonwealth and Northampton County have partnered to make a critical investment that will preserve another 30 acres of farmland in the Slate Belt for future generations. Protecting agricultural land from development is essential to maintaining the quality of life that residents across our region value and depend upon.

When criminals steal those benefits, they are stealing from people who can least afford it and from the taxpayers who fund these programs.”

Recently, I had the honor of welcoming Specialist Alcides Perez Jr. to the Capitol — a veteran whose service reflects the highest traditions of the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard.

Throughout his service, Specialist Perez demonstrated loyalty, courage, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers and to our nation. We were especially proud to recognize him for receiving the Purple Heart, awarded by the U.S. Department of the Army for injuries sustained as a result of enemy action on November 16, 2004. His unit was also awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation, further underscoring the extraordinary service and sacrifice of those with whom he served.

The Purple Heart is more than an award — it is a solemn acknowledgment of sacrifice. It reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy come at a cost, and that men and women like Specialist Perez have borne that cost with honor.

Please join me in thanking Specialist Perez for his service, sacrifice, and continued example of duty and integrity.

The need to expand the amount of affordable housing has always been critical here in the Lehigh Valley and that need has only been magnified in recent years.

Today, I’m proud to announce that eight affordable housing projects impacting the 18th Senatorial District have been approved for up to $1.46 million in funding through the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund (PHARE), which is managed through the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA).

State investment through PHARE is an important tool that helps direct funding to local communities working to address housing challenges and support residents in need.

My legislation to strengthen Pennsylvania’s response to SNAP and EBT skimming crimes took an important step forward this week, receiving unanimous approval as amended from the Senate Health & Human Services Committee.

Senate Bill 362 would modernize Pennsylvania law to better address the growing threat of criminals stealing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) information through skimming devices, scanners, reencoders, and other methods used to capture and misuse recipients’ access device information.

The legislation was amended in committee with input from the Pennsylvania Office of State Inspector General and Pennsylvania Department of Human Services to ensure the bill reflects current methods used by criminals and strengthens prosecutors’ ability to hold offenders accountable.

The bill now advances for further consideration in the legislative process.

Congratulations to Peron Development, City Center, Mayor Panto, and the City of Easton on the ribbon cutting of The Confluence. Peron and City Center have delivered another transformative project for Easton.

While the history of this site was highlighted, this project shows what’s possible — transforming an underutilized space into a vibrant, modern building and public park that will serve as a new gathering place for the community. Projects like The Confluence are the engines that drive regional growth, generating revenue that supports schools, parks, public infrastructure, and public safety.
