The Department of Public Works is responsible for maintenance and construction of the City public infrastructure and many basic services to Bethlehem city residents. The Department is comprised of six (6) bureaus: Engineering, Streets Maintenance, Mechanical Maintenance, Electrical Maintenance, Traffic Maintenance, and Urban Forestry. This page will be utilized to convey information about various

Public Works operations. The page will also give the public an opportunity to voice concerns. Please keep communication civil and productive. Our Water Department will be working on Union Boulevard, tomorrow 9/4, between New Street and Main Street.
During this time, the eastbound travel lane of Union Boulevard will be closed between New and Main and westbound traffic will be unaffected.
This work is expected to last for 1 day.

Our Water Department will be working on Center Street, tomorrow 8/28, between Broad Street and North Street. Center Street will be briefly closed for about half an hour, and will remain reduced to 1 lane for the rest of the day. This work is expected to last for 1 day.

A contractor for the City will be working on Stefko Boulevard, between E Washington Avenue and Pembroke Road, tomorrow 8/28. They will take 2 travel lanes, reducing the road to 1 lane in each direction. This work is expected to last for 1-2 days (continuing on Monday, if needed).

The City has contracted Heidelberg Materials to pave various City roads. Starting Monday 8/24, Heidelberg Materials has been approved to work night shift (6:00 PM - 6:00 AM) to pave the following roads:

• E Washington Avenue from Linden Street to Stefko Boulevard
(Monday 8/24 – Friday 8/28)
• Brodhead Avenue from W 3rd Street to Broadway
(Monday 8/31)
• Catasauqua Road from Pennsylvania Avenue to Kelchner Road
(Tuesday 9/1 – Friday 9/4)
• Stefko Boulevard from Pembroke Road to E Washington Ave.
(Tuesday 9/1 – Friday 9/4)

Heidelberg Materials will be working day shift to pave the following roads:

• Grandview Boulevard from W Broad Street to Florence Avenue
• Glendale Avenue from Grandview Boulevard to Keystone
Avenue
• Linwood Street from E Washington Avenue to Sycamore Street
• Millard Street from E Washington Avenue to 1644 Millard
Street

Please follow all posted "No Parking" signs or cars will be towed from the work zone.

Our Electrical Bureau will be working on the traffic signal at Pennsylvania Avenue and Pinehurst Road tomorrow 8/5, from 6:30 am to 1:30 pm. The traffic signal will be off during this time, and the intersection will be controlled by stop signs instead.

06/26/2026

A contractor will be closing an eastbound lane on W 3rd Street between Brodhead Avenue and New Street from Monday 6/29 to Wednesday 7/1 from 9 am to 3 pm each day. During this time, this portion of eastbound traffic will remain open but be reduced to 1 lane.

Additionally, another contractor will be working on Brodhead Avenue, from Summit Street to Packer Avenue. On Monday, 6/29 and Wednesday, 7/1 they will be reducing the road to 1 travel lane with flaggers. However, on Tuesday, 6/30 they will be closing the road. The detour for the closure will be Summit Street -> Montclair Avenue -> W Packer Avenue.

The Streets Department is planning on cleaning the storm drains on the northbound side of the Hill to Hill Bridge on Saturday June 20, 2026.
The right lane will be shut down from 6:00 am to 1:30 pm.

The Streets Department is planning on cleaning the storm drains on the southbound side of the Hill to Hill bridge on Saturday June 13 2026.
The right lane will be shut down from 6:00 am to 1:30 pm

UGI will be restoring trenches on S. New Street between 3rd Street and Mechanic Street tomorrow, 6/9/26. S. New Street will be closed both directions between 3rd Street and Mechanic Street, and marked with a Road Closed Ahead sign and a flagger at 4th and New Street. Traffic will still be able to access the New Street parking garage from 4th Street.

Starting tomorrow, 5/28, UGI will be restoring trenches on 3rd Street at Brodhead Avenue. They will be working in 1 lane at a time, keeping all other lanes open during that time, starting with the southbound right turn lane.

05/18/2026

On Thursday 5/21/26 the City Streets Department will be patching Illick’s Mill Rd. from Main St. extension to Monocacy Creek Rd. Hours of the closure will be 8 am- 1 pm. The west end of Illick’s Mill (Schoenersville Rd) will be open to the Memorial pool and hard closed at that point. 2 sign boards will be placed at either end of Illick’s Mill listing the closure.
