We're accepting a few more students in this year's Bettendorf Citizen Academy!
This 8-week program gives Bettendorf residents an in-depth look at how their city government works. All 11 departments shine a spotlight on their daily duties, including Library, Public Works, Police, and best of all - FIRE! We'll take you to our training facility to show you our firefighters hard at work.
If this sounds like something you'd like to participate in, send an email to Angie Sharp at [email protected] or read more online at www.bettendorf.org/CitizenAcademy

Truck 2 had a great time visiting Forest Grove Elementary School for a fire truck show-and-tell! The students got an up-close look at the truck, equipment, and what firefighters use every day to help keep our community safe.
A big thank you to the students and staff for having us out! We always enjoy getting the opportunity to meet the next generation of firefighters. 👨‍🚒👩‍🚒
Stay safe, Forest Grove! 🚒❤️

Today's weather kept us busy! Did you know that Scott County manages the outdoor sirens in our area? These sirens are used to alert people who are outside of an imminent hazard and prompt them to go inside and seek further information. In our area, sirens are activated for:
🌪️Tornados
💨Thunderstoms with 70+mph winds
⛈️Hail the size of a golf ball or larger.

Recently 2 of our explorers got to experience Illinois Fire Service Institute’s Explorer’s Weekend. These two young men were put through multiple evolutions and live fire scenarios to give them a taste of what firefighting is like. Both did very well, especially considering the extreme weather conditions. Thanks to Firefighters Scritchfield and Hodges for chaperoning. 🔥🚒

🐾 National Pet Fire Safety Day 🧯
Our pets are part of the family and keeping them safe starts long before an emergency happens. Today, on National Pet Fire Safety Day, we want to share a few easy steps you can take to prevent pet‑related fire hazards and keep everyone in your home protected.
🔥 Pet Fire Safety Tips
• Keep pets away from stoves and countertops where they might accidentally turn on or knock over cooking equipment.
• Avoid placing candles, lamps, or space heaters within reach of curious paws. Flameless candles are a great alternative.
• Use a metal or heat‑tempered glass screen on fireplaces and keep a 3‑foot pet‑free zone around them. Fireplace glass stays dangerously hot long after the fire burns out.
• Keep pets clear of exterior chimney vents.
• Watch for chewed electrical cords and have any damage inspected by a professional.
🚨 Smoke Alarm Safety
• Have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them monthly.
• If the alarm sounds, get out and stay out.
• Never go back inside for pets during a fire. Human life safety is always our top priority, and once people are safe, Bettendorf firefighters will go in and work to rescue your pets whenever conditions allow. Please let firefighters know right away if a pet is still inside.

Your Bettendorf Fire Department is committed to protecting every member of your household, two‑legged and four‑legged. Stay safe, Bettendorf! 🐶🐱🔥
