6/12/2026 Active high swim risk in place for Lake Michigan shoreline South of Empire (Benzie County) that may extend through Saturday.

Reminder to always be cautions of Lake Michigan, not just when you see active warnings.

Conditions change rapidly and it should never be regarded as just another "inland lake".

We hope everyone stays safe and has a wonderful Northern Michigan summer

Thursday 6/11/2026 - We are monitoring the potential severe storms headed toward Michigan for any impacts to Benzie County.

We always recommend to take time ahead of these forecasts (even if they may not appear severe for your area) to make sure you are prepared for potential power outages, travel disruptions, or damage from strong winds, heavy rain, hail, or debris.

Follow your preferred weather reporting source for updates.

BEFORE YOU GO!
6/9/2026. The lower section of the Betsie River - downstream from Grace Road is typically advertised as a "low intensity" float with slower water the closer you traverse toward Betsie Lake/Elberta.

After the April flooding and severe weather - this section - along with several other up-steam sections - has acquired some obstacles (undercurrents, sweepers & strainers) and is a bit more challenging. Paddlers are strongly encouraged to scope out their entire float section BEFORE beginning their paddle. Check in with local resources or scan social media conversations.

The Betsie River is a Michigan designated Natural River. There are limited structures and access points, including access for rescue personnel. The lower section is more remote than the upper portions and cellular signal has been know to be spotty .

Emergency services have responded to multiple calls already this year for Betise River water rescue, in additions to the ones that self rescued or were assisted by other paddlers.

It is not the "same" Betsie River and we ask that you take the necessary cautions, consider a float plan, know your skill level, and let somebody know your intentions before setting out.

Have a safe summer!

Remember to take care of yourself.
Today's Heat Risk is Moderate for Benzie County

Today is an okay day to be outside for most people.

People who are outside for a long time or who are sensitive to heat could have health impacts. Protect yourself and others when it's hot outside by staying cool, staying hydrated, and knowing the symptoms.

Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others. Check on your family, friends, and neighbors, especially if they live alone or have chronic medical problems. Don't forget to tend to pets and livestock and make sure they have a place to cool down.

More information about heat risk and your health can be found on the CDC heat risk dashboard https://ephtracking.cdc.gov/Applications/HeatRisk/

6/4/26 Please use caution and patience if you must travel into Honor @ US31 today and tomorrow. Avoid with an alternate route if possible.

🚨 URGENT TRAFFIC ALERT – HONOR, MI 🚨
6/4/2026 -PLEASE SHARE-

Today, Molon Excavating will be working with MDOT and BCRC to mill and repave US-31 through Honor.

The project limits extend from in front of the Benzie County Road Commission facility (Ely Rd.) to just past Riverside Drive, as shown on the project map. We will be milling 12' lanes and repaving.

This operation has a lot of moving parts, including numerous businesses, driveways, and side roads that must remain accessible throughout construction. Traffic will be reduced to one lane with flaggers directing vehicles through the work zone.

Please avoid the area if possible and expect delays if traveling through Honor today.

Most importantly, please slow down and stay alert where workers are present. Every person in that work zone has family and friends expecting them to make it home safely at the end of the day.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to improve this section of roadway.

In honor of National Pet Preparedness Month, the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) encourages Michiganders to create an emergency preparedness kit for their pets to ensure complete family readiness during an emergency or disaster.

"Pets are part of the family and they depend on us to keep them safe during emergencies," said Capt. Kevin Sweeney, deputy state director of Emergency Management and commander of the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division. “Taking a few simple steps now can make a significant difference when disaster strikes. Preparedness isn't just about protecting ourselves, it is about protecting every member of our household."

Whether facing severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, power outages, or other emergencies, having a plan in place before disaster strikes can help ensure the safety and well-being of both people and animals. Pets rely on their owners for protection during emergencies. Without proper preparation, families may face additional challenges when evacuating or sheltering in place.
Residents are encouraged to identify pet-friendly shelters, hotels, or boarding facilities in advance as many emergency shelters are unable to accommodate animals. Pet owners should also ensure pets wear identification tags, are microchipped when possible and have updated vaccinations and medical records readily available.

Creating a pet preparedness kit is a simple but important step toward full family readiness. Make sure these items are packed and stored in an easily accessible place:
• Food and water for at least three days, along with bowls
• Leash, collar, and pet carrier
• Recent photo of your pet and one of you with your pet
• Vaccination and medical records, plus necessary medications
• Pet first aid supplies: bandages, gloves, tweezers, antibiotic ointment, etc.
• Contact list for pet-friendly hotels, veterinarians, and out-of-town caregivers
• Sanitation bags and familiar toys to comfort your pet

If you need to report damage from April severe storms and flooding to a private primary residence please consider the Self-Reporting Survey: https://arcg.is/10ab1j

If you need assistance completing the survey please reach out to the Benzie County Office of Emergency Management and we will arrange an in-person meeting.

This survey is provided by the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division for statewide use for residents to report damage following disasters. Survey data is shared with local Emergency Management programs.

DAMAGE ASSEMENTS BEGIN: Preliminary damage assessments will begin tomorrow across 30 counties impacted by March’s severe weather. Teams from MSP/EMHSD, FEMA, and the U.S. Small Business Administration may be in your community evaluating the extent, severity, and impact of recent flooding and tornado damage.

The information gathered during these assessments helps determine whether the state meets the criteria to request a federal disaster declaration and FEMA Individual Assistance for affected residents.
