Today’s holiday parade did not disappoint, even in the rain, and a big highlight for me was our high school marching band and getting to walk with my Beverly Rotary Club and with one of my favorite guidance counselors and our Rotary HS Interact chair, Ms. Femino (Christmas tree)!

Hello Beverly!

Earlier this week the Massachusetts House of Representatives and the Massachusetts Senate issued official citations to Nurse Terri Whitaker and Assistant Principal Greg Twombly of the Beverly Middle School. These were issued during the Beverly School Committee meeting on Wednesday night by Senator Lovely and Representative Bowen in recognition of their life saving actions in the first weeks of school.

A thin water bottle cap from an eco friendly disposable water bottle became a projectile when pressure launched the cap into the student's throat and into the lung. Through the quick and calm actions of these two individuals, the student was stabilized and transported locally and then quickly moved to Boston.

Thank you to Mrs. Whitaker & Mr. Twombly for their actions!

Greetings Ward 2!

I will not be at an attendance at the next school committee meeting because I will be serving as a delegate to our annual conference for Massachusetts school committees. As I wind down my service on the school committee, I am pleased that we have another person stepping into this Ward 2, role! Congratulations to Madeline Lennox! Public service is a labor of love and I was grateful to serve in this role for four years and even more grateful that there was someone willing to step up and continue to support and represent Ward 2 👍🏽🙏

Public Hearings to:
Review K-12 Funding Formula

The Governor’s Office recently announced a series of public listening sessions to solicit feedback on the Chapter 70 school finance formula, the primary funding program that establishes how Massachusetts distributes education aid to cities and towns. The listening sessions are part of a Chapter 70 Local Contribution Study included in the state’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget and conducted by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and Department of Revenue’s Division of Local Services (DLS).

“Chapter 70 is the foundation for how we fund our schools. This is an opportunity for the public to help shape the future of a system that affects every student in Massachusetts,” said Education Secretary Dr. Patrick Tutwiler. “We strongly encourage our educators, families, community leaders and stakeholders to attend these sessions and let us know what is working and where we need to make changes.”

These listening sessions will inform the final Chapter 70 Local Contribution Study that examines the methods used to determine each municipality’s target local contribution and required local contribution toward school funding. The study will also consider the impact of factors such as income and property wealth, the effect on municipal services, and the unique challenges of rural and regional school districts. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and DLS expect to release the final report in the summer.
