The Biddeford Police Department joins our law enforcement partners across Maine in mourning the loss of Warden Joshua Tibbetts of the Maine Warden Service. We extend our deepest condolences to the Warden Tibbetts family, friends, and colleagues, and ask our community to keep them in their thoughts during this difficult time.

May 10th – 16th, 2026, is designated as National Police Week. Originally established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National Police Week includes National Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15) and a week of observances recognizing officers who have given their lives in the line of duty, including those who continue to serve and protect our communities with dedication and courage.

We pause to honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of law enforcement officers across the country — especially those officers who served the Biddeford Police Department and are no longer with us, but whose impact continues to be felt every day.

This week, we remember those from our family:

Patrolman Joseph Goulet EOW: June 15, 1920

Patrolman Honore Dutremble EOW: April 8, 1932

Patrolman Jean C. Mondville EOW: October 29, 1966

Detective Peter R. Wentworth EOW: September 11, 2016

Sergeant Jacob C. Wolterbeek EOW: December 12, 2024

Sergeant William J. Buhelt EOW: July 23, 2025

In law enforcement, when one officer falls, every officer feels it. The loss is never carried by one family, one department, or one community alone — it is shared by brothers and sisters across the badge. The grief, the memories, and the sacrifice reach far beyond a single agency, reminding us all of the bond that unites those who serve.

During National Police Week, we honor their memory, their service, and the lasting mark they left on all of us. Gone, but never forgotten.

On April 17, 2026, Biddeford Regional Communication Center (BRCC) received a telephone call from Northeast Ambulance reporting that one of its ambulances had just been stolen from the hospital in Biddeford. Northeast Ambulance had an active tracking device on the stolen ambulance and was able to provide live updates on the vehicle’s location.

After gathering all pertinent information, the caller was transferred to the Buxton Police Department dispatch center, as the stolen vehicle was traveling through the town of Buxton while Biddeford officers met with the complainant. Shortly thereafter, the Biddeford Police Department was advised that Buxton Police had located the stolen ambulance and conducted a traffic stop. Buxton officers swiftly detained the suspect and waited for Biddeford officers to arrive.

Officers identified the suspect as Crystal Zahn. Zahn was transported to the Biddeford Police Department for booking, and the ambulance was returned to its rightful owner.

Zahn was charged with:

Theft by Unauthorized Taking or Transfer (Class B)
Theft by Unauthorized Use of Property (Class D)

Zahn was subsequently transported to the York County Jail, where she was remanded into custody.

We would like to thank the Buxton Police Department for their assistance.

Behind every badge is a hero… and often a mom. Her bravery doesn’t end when the shift does—it shows up in every sacrifice, every long day, and every moment she steps forward when it matters most. Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms out there—especially the police moms who aren’t afraid to get the job done.

SCAM ALERT

We have been made aware that many people are receiving text messages from individuals claiming to represent the police department, a court, or other government agencies, demanding payment. These messages often state they are a “final notice” for various offenses and may include threats of legal action, license suspension, and more.

The Biddeford Police Department wants you to know that these messages are a scam. No legitimate government agency will contact you by text message to demand payment or issue legal threats.

Please do not respond to these messages and block the numbers. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Biddeford Police Department at (207) 284-2551.
