Happy first day of school to Biddeford’s students, faculty, and staff!

To our students: whether you are stepping into a classroom for the first time or beginning your senior year, this is a chance to explore new interests, build friendships, and discover what you can do. Stay curious, challenge yourself, and take pride in the progress you make as you work toward your goals.

To our teachers and every member of our school staff: thank you for the care, patience, and dedication you bring to our schools, including the work that begins long before students arrive. To our families: thank you for all you do to help your children start the year ready to learn.

Every student deserves to begin the school year knowing they belong, they matter, and their city is cheering them on.

As your Mayor, I wish you a year filled with discovery, growth, and plenty of moments to be proud of. Go Tigers!

I am pleased to nominate Jessica Muise to serve as Biddeford’s next Ward 4 City Councilor.

Her appointment will be subject to confirmation by the City Council on Tuesday, September 1.

This past Friday night at Waterhouse Field was a great opportunity to join Tiger Football Friends and Family for Community Night.

Thank you to Assistant Coach Aaron Toussaint for the invitation. It was great to meet the team, observe their walkthrough practice, and see the grit, camaraderie, and spirit they are bringing into the season.

It was also a pleasure to meet Coach Allosso and the rest of the coaching staff. I could see how much each coach cares about these student-athletes; not only helping them become better football players, but supporting them as teammates and young people.

That commitment extends well beyond the field. Players are putting in long days, families are supporting them every step of the way, and volunteers are giving their time to make nights like this and the season possible. It takes a lot of people to build a team.

The Tigers open their season September 3 against Brunswick at Waterhouse Field. With fall athletics beginning next week, I wish all of Biddeford’s student-athletes a successful final week of double sessions and the very best of luck this fall season.

Investing in Biddeford’s Emergency Medical Services

At Tuesday’s Finance Committee meeting, Fire Chief Larry Best provided a final update on $102,698.33 in state funding Biddeford received through the Maine EMS Sustainability Program.

The full grant has now been put to work strengthening emergency medical services in Biddeford. Funding supported a new LUCAS CPR device, upgraded EMS training technology, and training for 42 personnel, including four members pursuing Paramedic certification and one pursuing Advanced EMT certification. It also helped cover specialized EMS courses and staffing costs, allowing personnel to attend training while maintaining emergency response coverage.

These investments mean better-equipped responders, more advanced certifications, and stronger emergency care for Biddeford — all with no local matching funds required.

Thank you to Chief Best, the entire Biddeford Fire Department, and the Biddeford City Council for continuing to invest in the people, equipment, and training that support this essential service.

A recap from Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.

The Council approved six mayoral appointments and a fee waiver for a special event.

The Finance Committee also received an update from Biddeford Fire Department Chief Larry Best on the Maine EMS Sustainability Grant. The City fully utilized the $102,698.33 award to strengthen emergency response by purchasing a new LUCAS CPR device, upgrading training technology, and providing training for 42 EMS personnel.

Even if it does not capture the incident itself, it may help provide important context surrounding the death of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero.

For those who have asked how they can support the family's search for answers, this is one meaningful way to help.

This weekend, I had the pleasure of welcoming Teen Biddeford 2026, Mya Quesada, to City Hall to discuss her platform and the important work she is leading to raise awareness of dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

Mya, a rising sophomore at Biddeford High School, shared her lived experience with dyslexia, her advocacy, and her vision for ensuring every student has the support they need to succeed. I learned a great deal from our conversation, including how students with dyslexia often learn to read differently and why evidence-based, structured literacy approaches such as Orton-Gillingham can make a meaningful difference for many learners.

Thank you, Mya, for your time, your insight, and your willingness to turn your personal experiences into advocacy for others. I look forward to continuing this conversation with Mya, the Biddeford School Committee, and the Biddeford School Department as we explore ways to strengthen support and improve learning outcomes for Biddeford students with dyslexia.

Thank you again, Mya, for your leadership. I look forward to seeing all that you accomplish during your year as Teen Biddeford and beyond.

City Council Recap | Tuesday, July 28, 2026

A recap from Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.

The Council approved two mayoral appointments, FY26 carryover requests and dedicated reserves, the acceptance of $1,932 in state asset forfeiture funds, and a regional partnership with Old Orchard Beach to provide General Assistance coverage when staff is away.

We also received an update from Don Gerrish on the search for Biddeford’s next City Manager. The City Manager position will be posted today, July 29, formally beginning the recruitment process for this important role.
