Creating and maintaining is essential to reducing the impacts of wildfire on your home and property. Defensible space, which is made up of three zones, is the buffer created between a building on your property and the plants, brush, trees, or other combustible items in the near vicinity. Zones 1 and 2 make up the 100 feet of defensible space required by law. AB 3074, passed into law in 2020, requires the Board of Forestry to develop a regulation for a new ember-resistant zone (Zone 0) within zero to five feet of the home by January 2023 for new construction and implemented for existing construction in 2024. For more information on zones, visit ReadyforWildfire.org.

Even if a residential landscape is allowed in your area, you should still be aware of the weather conditions. Prevent sparking a wildfire by never burning during extremely hot, windy, or dry weather and always check with your local fire station or CAL FIRE station, as well as local air quality management agency before burning.
