The Village of Big Bend Police Department: A Legacy of Service

The Village of Big Bend Police Department stands as a cornerstone of public safety and community well-being in the picturesque Village of Big Bend, Wisconsin. While the village itself boasts a rich history dating back to its early settlement, the formal establishment and evolution of its police department reflect the community's endur

ing commitment to order, protection, and the rule of law. Early Beginnings and Evolution

Like many small communities, Big Bend's initial policing efforts relied on constables and informal citizen patrols in its nascent years. As the village grew and its population expanded, the need for a more structured and professional law enforcement presence became evident. Since 1928 there has been a law enforcement presence in the village with a formal police department forming in 1941, marking a pivotal moment when the community decided to invest in dedicated officers to maintain peace and respond to its unique challenges. Over the decades, the Big Bend Police Department has adapted to the changing landscape of law enforcement. From its early days, operating with a handful of officers and limited resources, it has grown into a modern police force equipped with the training, technology, and community-oriented philosophy necessary to serve its residents effectively. This evolution has mirrored the village's own development, with the department expanding its capabilities to address everything from traffic enforcement and property crimes to more complex investigations and community outreach initiatives. Commitment to Community Policing

A defining characteristic of the Big Bend Police Department has been its strong emphasis on community policing. In a village where residents often know their neighbors, the police department has fostered a close relationship with the citizens it serves. This approach goes beyond simply responding to calls; it involves proactive engagement, building trust, and working collaboratively with community groups, schools, and local businesses. Officers are often seen participating in village events, conducting safety programs, and being accessible to residents, reinforcing the idea that they are an integral part of the community, not just an external authority. This dedication to community policing helps to prevent crime, resolve conflicts, and enhance the overall quality of life in Big Bend. It reflects an understanding that effective law enforcement is built on mutual respect and cooperation between officers and the public. Challenges and Adaptations

Like all police departments, the Big Bend Police Department has faced its share of challenges. These have included adapting to new technologies, population growth, commercial development, changing societal expectations, and resource management. Through it all, the department has demonstrated resilience and a commitment to continuous improvement. Training and professional development have been paramount, ensuring that officers are well-prepared to handle a diverse range of situations with professionalism and integrity. Looking Forward

Today, the Village of Big Bend Police Department continues its vital work, upholding its mission to protect life and property, maintain order, and provide a safe environment for all who live, work, and visit the village. Its history is a testament to the dedication of the men and women who have served and continue to serve its ranks, embodying the spirit of public service and the enduring values of the Big Bend community. The department remains a vigilant guardian, committed to evolving with the needs of the village while honoring its legacy of service and community partnership.

***Highway 164 (Clark St) / Highway L (Milwaukee Ave.) Traffic Signal issue update. ***

Yesterday's work by WI-DOT Electricians didn't seem to completely fix the issue. They came back out this morning at our request to attempt to get the issue sorted out where westbound Highway L wasn't getting a green light to go straight and only getting a left turn signal.

We thank everyone for their patience while this gets sorted out.

We understand that it's frustrating and just want to remind everyone not to go through the red light. We had a close call yesterday morning, due to someone going through the red light on highway L and almost getting hit by a vehicle that had the green light on highway 164.

E-Bikes vs. E-Motos

With the weather warming up, we’ve seen an influx of high-powered electric vehicles around town, and there's a lot of confusion about what is legally considered a bicycle and what is actually an off-highway motorcycle.

Here is a quick breakdown to help you and your family know the law:

✅ E-BIKES (Legal on Public Roads)To be legally operated where traditional bicycles are allowed (roadways, bike lanes, bike paths, and most multi-use trails), an e-bike must be designed and manufactured as a bicycle and have fully operable pedals. In Wisconsin, they fall into three legal classes:

Class 1: Pedal Assist Only – Motor assist up to 20 MPH.
Class 2: Throttle or Pedal Assist – Motor assist up to 20 MPH.
Class 3: Pedal Assist Only – Motor assist up to 28 MPH.

❌ E-MOTOS (NOT Legal on Public Roads) Many vehicles marketed as "e-bikes" are actually E-Motos / Off-Highway Motorcycles. These are designed for off-highway use, not as bicycles. They do NOT meet e-bike standards. They are NOT legal on public roadways, streets, sidewalks, bike paths, or multi-use trails (with very limited exceptions in state law under Wis. Stat. §23.335(10)).

⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTE: Simply adding pedals, riding slowly, or labeling a vehicle as an "e-bike" does not change its legal classification. What matters is how the vehicle is designed, its performance capabilities, and its intended use.

Our recent "Click It or Ticket" enforcement campaign has officially wrapped up. Our officers were hard at work keeping our roads safe and we have compiled the final numbers.

During this period, officers conducted targeted commercial motor vehicle inspections, school zone enforcement, and work zone safety details. Violations addressed spanned a wide range—our team issued citations for everything from lewd and lascivious behavior to defective trailer brakes. The full spectrum.

With summer now in full swing, traffic is picking up and our community's safety remains our top priority. Please take extra care whenever you are on the road:
🛑 Slow down
📱 Avoid distractions
🎟 Always wear your seat belt—every trip, every seat, every time.

Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe!

🚧 Intersection Delay Update 🚧

If you’ve noticed longer wait times at HWY 164 and Milwaukee /Janesville/Forest Home during your evening commute, here is what’s going on:

The Cause: Independent turn signals were added from 3pm–7pm to help manage heavy overflow traffic from the I-43 project.

The Issue: This has unfortunately backed up through traffic.

The Fix: State electricians have been called to adjust the timing and improve the flow.

🛑 Safety First: The lights are functioning and cycling. Please do not run the red lights—it’s dangerous, illegal, and puts everyone at risk. Stay safe out there!

🛟 Village Park Safety Enhancements 🛟

Your safety is our top priority. After the severe flooding and several swift-water rescues our county faced last year, we knew we needed to take proactive steps to increase safety measures right here in our own community.

We are proud to share that the Village of Big Bend Department of Public Works recently installed three emergency life rings in our Village Park.

This addition was a true community effort. We want to extend a massive thank you to the local organizations that stepped up to make this happen:

The cost of these lifesaving tools was generously split between Rumble By The River Village of Big Bend and the Lions Club of Big Bend - Vernon. Graphics were donated and created by Hoopsters Graphics.

Please Note: These emergency tools are equipped with security devices to prevent tampering and ensure they are ready to go if an emergency ever arises.

While we hope we never have to use them, we can all rest a little easier knowing our residents and visitors are safer with these critical devices nearby. Thank you to everyone involved in keeping Big Bend safe!

With Memorial Day weekend and summer travel right around the corner, the Big Bend Police Department is teaming up with law enforcement agencies across Wisconsin and the nation for the annual Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement campaign.

Expect to see an increased police presence. Our officers will be conducting saturation patrols specifically looking for seat belt violations, both day and night.

Our goal isn’t to write tickets; it’s to save lives and make sure everyone returns home safely to their families.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), wearing a seat belt reduces your risk of fatal injury by 45% to 50% in a crash.

Airbags are designed to work with seat belts, not replace them. If you aren't buckled, the force of a deploying airbag can actually cause severe injury.

Think you don't need a belt for a quick trip to the store? Most traffic crashes and fatalities occur within 25 miles of home and at speeds under 40 mph.

In a crash, an unbuckled occupant becomes a dangerous, airborne projectile. Buckling up protects you and everyone else in the vehicle.
