This make Big Island the oldest fire department stationed in Bedford County. The first apparatus owned by the BIVFD was a 1939 Chevrolet/Oren pumper purchased from the Bedford County Board of Supervisors in 1952. However, delivery of the truck could not take delivery until the new "county pumper" could be delivered to the Bedford Fire Department. The next truck purchased, but first in service in B

ig Island was a 1934 open cab, chain driven American LaFrance pumper. The Chevrolet/Oren pumper remains in the Big Island Fire Department to this day. The American LaFrance was later sold to the Big Island paper mill. It was used as a supplemental fire system pump for years. It was eventually sold to an unknown buyer. Recently we began a process of relocating the ALF but leads dried up after narrowing it's location down to "a field somewhere near Richmond Va".

🔥 WILDFIRE SAFETY MESSAGE FOR BEDFORD COUNTY RESIDENTS 🔥

Although Virginia’s 4PM Burning Law remains in effect through April 30, current dry conditions and wind continue to increase the risk for brush and wildland fires across our area.

The 4PM Burning Law allows outdoor burning between 4PM and midnight, but legal does not always mean safe. (Please note: The Town of Bedford currently has a burn ban in effect at all times.)

Before burning in Bedford County, please consider:
đź’¨ Current wind conditions
🌾 Dry grass, leaves, and brush
đźš’ Proximity to homes, woods, and structures
đź’§ Having a water source immediately available

Please help us keep our community safe by postponing outdoor burning when conditions are dry or windy. Small fires can spread rapidly and threaten homes, property, and lives in a matter of minutes.

We continue to closely monitor conditions and remain in regular communication with Virginia Department of Forestry regarding any need for additional restrictions or a local burn ban.

Thank you for doing your part to help prevent wildfires in Bedford County.
