PUBLIC AWARENESS NOTICE

The Big Rapids Department of Public Safety is aware of an individual currently walking on State Street near Perry Ave. The individual is described as a male wearing a black vest, brown cargo pants, a neon-colored shirt, and black sunglasses, with what appears to be a rifle strapped to his chest.

Officers are aware of the individual and are continuing to monitor the situation. At this time, we have no information indicating that the individual has committed a crime or is making threats toward the public. Michigan law generally permits the open carry of a firearm, and simply carrying a firearm openly does not, by itself, constitute a criminal offense.

We understand that seeing someone openly carrying what appears to be a rifle may cause concern. We ask the public to remain calm and not approach or confront the individual.

Our officers will continue to monitor the situation and respond appropriately if circumstances change. If you observe threatening behavior, the firearm being pointed or brandished, or believe there is an immediate danger to the public, please call 911.

We appreciate the community's awareness and cooperation.

Over the next couple of weeks the City of Big Rapids has several milling and paving jobs that will be taking place.

Here is the schedule for the work taking place:
Monday 8/10 – Milling 200 N Michigan Ave Parking Lot
Tuesday 8/11 – Paving 200 N Michigan Ave Parking Lot
Thursday 8/13 – Milling Linden St and possibly 2 spots at Airport
Friday 8/14 – Milling Dekrafft and Bjornson
Friday 8/14 – Paving Linden and Airport
Saturday 8/15 – Paving Dekrafft and Bjornson
Monday 8/17 – Milling Michigan Ave
Tuesday 8/18 – Paving Michigan Ave

Please note that there will be no parking allowed on these streets on the days that work is taking place. If your vehicle is parked there, you are subject to being towed. All of these dates are weather dependant. If there are changes, they will be posted on either our social media accounts or the City of Big Rapids social media accounts.

This person frequently seems to “forget” to pay for their meals that they ordered. It’s at least the second time this week. If you know who they are, please give us a call so we can give them a “reminder” to pay. 231-527-0005
